About
Niños de Guatemala is a nonprofit organization that offers a unique opportunity to get off the beaten tourist path and see first-hand cultural & adventure sights. Experience Antigua, Guatemala, a UNESCO world heritage site, as well as the abundant Guatemalan countryside. Our experiences consist of visiting local, non-touristic towns with activities such as worry-doll making, chicken bus tours, culinary tours, cultural and historic walking tours, coffee and chocolate tours, and volunteering for a day at the schools of the nonprofit. We also offer national tours to Tikal, Iximche, Lake Atitlán, and much more. Niños de Guatemala Tours is a social enterprise donating 100% of profits back to the education of over 500 children in Guatemala who could otherwise not go to school.

I booked a Saturday ‘Chicken Bus Tour’ with Niños de Guatemala was thrilled to hear that the $40 fee goes directly to the organization. They’re doing amazing work in Ciudad Vieja and the sounding communities lucky enough to have a school! My tour guide, Tania, was fantastic and she truly made the tour special! I have so much admiration for the work she does with Niños de Guatemala and I also love her independence and friendly demeanor. I felt like I was hanging out with a friend all morning! Tania met me outside the house where I’m staying and together we took a ‘chicken bus’ to Ciudad Vieja to see the main school for Niños de Guatemala. Of course, it was Saturday and the students weren’t there (so if you’d like to visit it when they are, try to book a weekday tour). We discussed their programs and how local families take pride in the school. I am really impressed at how they’re changing the futures for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to go to school (public school here is expensive for many families because parents have to buy uniforms and books for their kids every year). After visiting the school, we walked to a factory where they turn old school buses from the US and other countries into ‘chicken buses’ (aka public transportation). It really was interesting to see how they basically remove everything and re-build it from scratch and finish with color and art. Very interesting! Then, Tania gave me a tour of town and our final stop was a private home where I learned how to make tortillas. The mother and daughter there were lovely and I truly enjoyed connecting with local Guatemalans. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Antigua or the surrounding area. You can give back to the community and you’ll learn something while doing it! The tours can be in English or Spanish, and if you want to learn more about the culture here in Guatemala, the tours with Niños de Guatemala are excellent!

Spending a day with Tania doing private tour of the city in the first part of the day (including hiking to the hill of the cross) and around the market on the second part of the day trying local fruit. Highly recommend, priced reasonably and for a good cause. Tania ie excellent and dynamic guide, so glad to have her!

I tried to reserve a chicken bus tour in mid February after emailing with Ninos staff. I called the office a few days prior to the date we wanted to do the tour and was told to reserve on line. A deposit was required. I was sent an automatic email saying there was no tour available that day. I called the office and they said someone had booked a private tour so they couldn't accommodate the two of us. They offered to look for another guide and said they would let me know, but I never heard from them. I stopped by their office when back in Antigua, asking for my deposit. They said it would take 7 days. It is now almost a month and I have yet to receive the deposit. So be careful when you reserve with them!!

The tour was just perfect. The Organisation was without any complains and the tour guide was so nice and so well informed. We took the chicken but to visit on the the schools and also attended a very private worry doll workshop. You can see how this Organisation has a direct impact on the children’s life and it is simply amazing.

We booked a private tour to hike Pacaya from Antigua. Logistics were exactly as advertised, arrived a few minutes before departure, van was very nice, driver very good, guide was informative, everything worked perfectly. Guide on Pacaya very knowledgable - we have climbed it 3 times and learned a lot new. Every trip up has been different as volcanic activity at the top changes the landscape. Wonderful way to spend half the day in Antigua. Plus profits go to support a worthwhile cause. Could not recommend this tour enough.

Wonderful to experience the good that is being done first hand to improve the number of children receiving an education. They also receive a meal, toothbrush and hand hygiene. Making the worry doll was so much fun. Dalila, our guide, was sweet and knowledgeable.

Day 1 in Guatemala and had the great fortune to do a last-minute walking tour of Antigua. Stephanie worked some scheduling magic and off we went with Daniela for an awesome afternoon. She was a wealth of local knowledge and willingly shared a very interesting mix of history and culture with us, and helped us understand life here. Highly recommend!

I booked a tour with Niños de Guatemala while staying in Antigua because I found their offer interesting from a cultural perspective and I found their work worth supporting with a donation.
I ended up having a guide just for myself because nobody else had signed up for the day. It was great!
Daniela was a great, nice and knowledgeable guide. We visited The Good Hotel in Antigua (I had no idea about it!), then went to Ciudad vieja by chicken bus (Daniela explained to me why they're called like that, I didn't know), we visited the schools that Niños de Guatemala built and established from scratch there (an impressive feat that I encourage you to support with a donation if you can!) as well as visiting the workshop where chicken buses are refurbished and repurposed and a small coffin manufacturing place.
A really great experience that I can recommend to anyone curious and interested in social issues and in spending a pleasant few hours learning about Guatemala while helping a good cause.

We really enjoyed our tour to the schools and the manufactures in Ciudad Vieja! Hannah our guide was very nice and shared a lot of information about the educational system as well as the Guatemalan society in general! It was impressive to see what niños de Guatemala has achieved so far. We would absolutely recommend this tour!
