The Santo Domingo church and monastery constructed in 1538 and destroyed in an earthquake in 1773 is now an aged by the Santo Domingo Hotel in Antigua. There is an entry fee of 48 quetzals (6 USD approx). The relics have all been well preserved and the museum is divided into many sections. Expect to spend around two hours.

This wandering route through an art gallery, historic Pharmacy, private home and music sala lead you to a fabulous Art Gallery next to Santo Domigo. It is inspired. It features display cases with a trio of pieces which reflect a theme: one pre-Columbian, and two contemporary. Just fabulous and has great didactic.

It took some work to find this place, tucked away in the northeast (?) corner of Antigua, but once you make your way through the hotel complex you'll find walkways leading off through church ruins to all sorts of unexpected things -- multiple macaws, an archaeological museum, a crypt, a chocolate shop with superior truffles, and my target: a museum combining pre-Colombian art with modern works by glass masters -- pairing up ancient pottery or sculpture of jaguars, birds or humans with modern interpretations. Beautiful and well done. We found it late in the day but would have had fun exploring the whole grounds for a couple hours.

Somehow I'd never visited Santo Domingo's Museum of Maya Ceramics and Modern Glass, so was eager to make it up on this visit ot Antigua. It's a very odd place. The exhibition space is state-of-the-art, with handsome vitrines and excellent lighting. The objects themselves, though, are less than inspiring, and the collection's stated raison d'ĂŞtre, to reveal continuities between Maya art and modern works in glass, is puzzling: just what point is supposed to be made by these juxtapositions? Surely no one would believe that we are looking at examples of direct influence, and if these objects are meant to illustrate some kind of deep universals in the human psyche, they fail. Most of the modern glass is hokey, even tacky; by the time I was done, I was satisfied that the museum's holdings could easily bne used to decorate two Holiday Inns and three cheap Greek restaurants and no one would be the wiser.
What is most troubling, though, is that the Maya pieces on display are virtually all unaccompanied by any kind of known provenance. In other words, we are looking at looted art and artifacts--not, I hasten to add, stolen by their present owners, but certainly purchased from "collectors" whose standards were not quite as high as they might have been. As a result, even the prettiest objects to be seen here are entirely without scholarly value, a real shame, and the visitor interested in learning more about the Maya civilization and its art will be disappointed and frustrated.

If history is where your interests lie you'll get lost here. Same goes for painters and photographers. With volcanoes in the background all the views are intriguing.

I was looking for something to do and came upon the Paseo De Los Museos by chance while learning the layout of Antigua. You need to search all the nooks for hidden treasures like the burial tombs down the rather plain looking spiral stair case. I enjoyed my visit and found that I spent more time on the site then expected. The exhibits were varied. Attached to the facility is a rather swanky hotel. That I also snooped around a touch.

This attraction is located at the Casa Santo Domingo, a high-end hotel with fancy restaurant. One does not need to stay at the hotel nor dine at its restaurant to visit its various attractions. Entrance fee is only 42 quetzales per person.
Its attractions include the beautiful fountain, 3 crypts, ceramics, archeology museum, Pre columbia and Glass Art Museum, Museo de Farmacia, Sacatepequez Arts and Handicraft Museum, Chocolateria, etc.
Tips: Remember to visit the Plateria located in the basement of the Entrance where entrance tickets are purchased. It is not listed in the map.
Read and review the map given at the Entrance to ensure that you visit all the attractions before leaving.

I'm dumbfounded that the front desk didn't give us a map of the property upon check-in. It took us til day 3 of a 5 day stay to realize our hotel had a whole back part to it that's not rooms. The museum is modern and interesting and the ruins are artistic and a photographer's dream! The restaurant is very good, so combining the museums with a meal would make good sense. The chocolate shop is delicious, and I'm not a chocolate lover normally.

There are four museums inside this striking hotel. One colonial arts, one precolumbian, one silver work, and my favorite that pairs Mayan artifacts with contemporary glass artworks. All are located within the ruins of a church and convent. The gardens of the hotel are splendid and alive with birds.

I loved this place. Rather than start at the luxury hotel, enter the museum on Avenida 1a and begin your tour at the old pharmacy museum. The entrance fee here is 40 Q, versus 48 Q at the hotel, unless you are staying at the hotel, which gives you free entrance. You walk through many ruins of churches, a convent and crypts, but for me the highlight was the PreColumbian exhibit of statues and pottery curated by subject and situated beside modern glassworks. For example, ancient statues of eagles were beside a modern glasswork of an eagle in the same display case. There are equally impressive displays of snakes, rabbits, crocodiles and other subjects. Wonderful curation. Highly recommended.
