My boyfriend and I booked the Acatenango overnight hike with Ox Expeditions & were very happy with our adventure with them. Our guide was super knowledgable and continually kept us updated with how much longer we had to go, and made sure we had enough breaks to stop and rest. This is NOT an easy hike by ANY means, but the crew made sure that everybody stuck together. I also loved that once we got to base camp, we got the option to do the 'double whammy' and go to Fuego as well. We opted in for that, and MAN was that a cool experience. Ox was very professional in not letting us get TOO close to the erupting volcano, but finding us a nice spot where we could sit and see the eruptions out of the strong winds as best we can. On our way down, another company left behind an older man who was struggling to get down the mountain. With all the loose dirt, he kept falling. Our guide helped him down the rest of the way! If you are planning on doing either of these hikes, DEFINITELY go with Ox. There's no better company to go with.

We chose OX tours based on their good reviews and were not disappointed. The company was professional, organized and knowledgable. Unfortunately I got very sick on the way up due to medication I had started. My partner and I were unable to complete the hike. Our guide was cheering me on the whole time and was so supportive and nice. He made sure we had someone to escort us down to the van where we waited for everyone to return. Everyone on the group tour had an amazing time and great photos to share with us. I will certainly be back to try this again!

Why? Man, where do I start. Pay the extra, its worth every cent. They provide ample food to keep you going from the morning to the end of the trip. They have great knowledgable and helpful guides (Romeo & Daniel, you guys rock!), they are great at timing for sunsets and sunrises so you are first on the peaks to watch the lava show out of feugo and get the best seats, even for sunrises on Acatengo. Plenty of rest breaks but still keep you on time. They dont care how slow you are, they have endless patience and work really well as a team to keep you motivated and check on you when they notice you might not be doing too well. Also, they include everything in the price upfront. If you need a proper hiking backpack, gloves, warm fleeces (which by the way they check if you have warm enough clothing to do the hike - thanks Steph!). They have filtered water at the office to top up your water bottles before your trip. It's a serious hike! If you aren't fit, do not do it. It will be one of the most challenging rewarding, difficult hikes you'll ever do, no matter your fitness level. It is a volcano, super steep with a magnificent view as the reward. I would recommend over night trips to get the best value out of it. That being said, wear proper hiking boots, sneakers dont work. We watched people slip and slide on the way down and almost hurt themselves. You do not have enough grip on the gravel and end up going slower, visa versa for ascending and descending. This is a hard hike, when the professionals tell you to do or take something. Listen. They are very informative from the pre briefing the day before. Long synthetic or hiking pants, yes! Rent the walking sticks for Q5 at the base of the hike - a real life saver! We were taken care of from start finish. A big thank you for the hike of a lifetime, Romeo & Daniel, with every luxury and smile possible!

Not an experience for the feint hearted! probably one of the most exhausting hikes that I have ever done... BUT boy was it worth it. the experience was made even better by the outfit we chose to go with. Ox were awesome, professional and caring from start to finish. our guides Romero and Daniel were very supportive. some tips: hiking boots NOT sneakers drink lots of water, then drink some more. Hike Fuego at sunset... you'll never forget it. the walk down is a piece of cake compared to the hike up! enjoy yourself, go at your own pace.

The hike was amazing but I wish I picked another company. This was one of the most expensive so I thought it would be the best. Boy was I wrong. I asked for a porter both ways as I know the backpack did not fit right, it was heavy, and I’m not a seasoned hiker. The way there everything ran smoothly. On the way back there were no porters after I triple checked. I was almost in tears all the way down carrying the heavy load alone. Also the hike in the Morning to the summit was ran by an intern who has never done the hike, and we got a bit lost. Only a little. Everything else was perfect. I was super sore and had blistered feet. Insert sad face here.
