Doña Maria Gordillo has a tradition of over 100 years and they can really keep their secret recipes secret as I have looked high and low and have yet to find another establishment that comes close to making traditional candy as delicious as Doña Maria. This is a must visit while in Antigua, I was born and lived for most of my life in Guatemala city and every time we visited Antigua we had to go to Doña Maria to get the candy. Some of my favorites include: canillitas de leche, marzipan fruits, chilacayote, huevos chimbos, orange balls (naranjitas), tamarind balls (tamarinds), guava curls (colochos de guayaba), nuegados, cocadas reales and figs. The variety is endless and they are all delicious, they also have beautiful hand painted boxes in case you want to take some home as a gift (the boxes are a lot more expensive than if you got them at the mercado though!). The prices are high but it's still well worth it and the other traditional candy stores really don't have the quality that Doña Maria has.

You have to go to this place and try their sweets. It is a family business that has been operating since the 1800. They have different kinds of sweets and they can pack them nicely for your trip. The sweets last about 4-5 days without refrigeration after that they are still good but a bit hard. They make sweets of figs, guava, milk, coconut, tamarind ; mostly made with white sugar. We brought some for my sister and I have to confess that we did not give them to her and ate them all ... they are really good !

I simply could not walk past this shop! I glanced in and just had to see what it was all about. When I discovered it was traditional sweet treats, oh my! How wonderful! I bought a candied fig with coconut for Q8 and a marzipan and cinnamon flower for Q7. So delicious! I could have spent a lot of money in this store just trying all the interesting and unique treats. There are also a hundred pottery owls on the shelves. They are owl banks! (Like piggybanks back home.) They also sold other pottery items. My friend bought peacock napkin rings.
Definitely stop into this store and buy a treat. You don't regret it!

Antigua was the Capital of Central America during the Spanish empire, and is one of the most visited tourist locations of Guatemala. In there, one of the things you must do is eating typical candies. It's a signature of the city. And the best place by far is Doña Maria Gordillo. They manufacture the candies "the old fashion way", and the store is typical of a last century "tienda". And you have to make a line, there is no computers or electronic devices to make your check: it is made by hand!!! But is worth the wait. Have been going there for over 40 years and they mantain the quality of the products. Check for the opening hours, and it is located conveniently to make it your last stop before you leave Antigua. I do that!!!

A third generation pastry shop with incredible pastries. My favorite were the coconut and guava pastries. The place is very interesting with usually long lines (but worth the wait). The place is eclectic and when you first walk in you think you are in an arts and crafts shop instead of bakery. You cant go wrong with any of the choices.

This place is across the street from Coco Museo which is a chocolate place. But this is so different and unique. You can buy individual sweets and make your own pack. My spanish is almost non-existent so it was very interesting to order! None of the staff spoke english, but I am not allergic to milk or nuts so I just ordered whatever looked interesting. They have a strip shaped leche candy which tastes like hardened condensed milk. It is awesome! These candies remain fresh for 3-4 days so we were able to carry it back with us. Definitely a must-try.

After dinner treats. Wonderful, delicious sweets. We had the filled dates with marzipan, cinnamon and raisin for 12 Q. We will be back tonight. Highly recommended MeuterMedia

A visually wonderful and tasty Guatemalan sweets shop with walls lined with traditional brightly colored ceramic owls. Although there are many delicious pastries to choose from, the small marzipan treats are the real highlight. Yum!

It is my understanding that this local establishment has been producing sweets for a very long time and that the recipes
have stayed the same throughout the years. The interior is charming with wood and glass cabinets filled with delectable goodies and walls lined with ceramic colorful owls. I had a Canillita de Leche which is like a dissolve in your mouth, sweet white fudge and a Higo (candied fig) which was amazing! Difficult to explain the texture of a candied fig but don’t worry about it; just go there and get one, or two, or three of everything!

We were taking a walking tour of old Antiqua and the guide took us into this shop. It was amazing with all the little treats and dulces that were there for us to choose from. We had 4 treats and it cost a little over 3 dollars US.
