About
This monumental arch was built as a passageway between the monastery and adjoining school. The buildings were constructed to accommodate an increase in religious followers during the 17th century.

Classic Colonial Structure to See
Jul 2021
Gorgeous piece of architecture. It's definitely a must see when in Antigua. Try and go super early in the morning or late at night. During the day, even during COVID, it's got lots of people hustling and bustling about.

NEAT ARCHITECTURE
Jul 2021 • Solo
Neat architecture, but it's just an arch. Worth seeing, though. There are nice shops in the area to check out. Several sightseers were taking pictures of the arch.

Iconic view
Jun 2021 • Solo
One of those spots you can’t avoid seeing, incredibly iconic and well located. For nice photos, I highly recommend going around sunrise when no one around. Right underneath the arch there’s a little wine shop that’s well worth the stop as well.

A bit overrated
Apr 2021
This may be an unpopular opinion but this attraction is overrated. Once you take your picture there's not much to do here. Coffee shops and restaurants around the place are overpriced and don't get me started on the "native craft" shops. Yes, it's a symbol of Guatemala, and yes Vulcan de Agua looks impressive looming above but in the end it's only good for a few minutes then you will move on.

Great Iconic Antigua Photo Opportunity
Mar 2021
The street leading to the arch has lots of vendors and shops of Guatemalan handcrafts and the arch itself is one of the famous images of the Antigua area. A quick walk from the central square.

Beautiful Arch worth a short visit
Mar 2020 • Couples
Guatemala was a stop on our cruise ship so we signed up for a Blue Planet shore excursion which drove us 2 hours to Antigua. There are so many sites to visit in this beautiful city including the Arco de Santa Catalina. The Arch was built in the 1690s so cloistered nuns could walk from the convent to the school without having to cross the streets of the city. You can see the Agua Volcano in the background as you stand under the arch. I highly recommend a short visit for some great pictures.

Day walk

Lots of shops around. The church next to it is beautiful and there's street food all around. That area is worth going for a walk.

It is impossible not to pass it when in Antigua. Cute and nice, but a little hyped from SoMe. Take a few pictures and be on your way to bigger adventures

A landmark and a symbol of Antigua!
Nov 2019
Welcome to the "Arco de Santa Catalina"! A beautiful arch and a landmark of Antigua! At the beginning of the 17th century, there were two convents - the "Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción de María" and the "Convento de Santa Catalina Mártir" - and the cloistered nuns. As the convents expanded to the other side of the existing street, the nuns were authorized to build a passage connecting the constructions. A "closed" arch was the solution then envisaged - the cloistered nuns would cross the street without being seen by any passerby. They would never imagine that, nearly 400 years later, the "Arco de Santa Catalina" would be an iconic symbol of Antigua and that the humble cobbled street would be worldly known as "Calle del Arco". The convents are still there and house today a cozy hotel - the "Hotel Convento de Santa Catalina". The arch "frames" the awesome "Volcán de Agua" in its background! Unforgettable pictures and fond memories to take home! Enjoy!
