About
This monumental arch was built as a passageway between the monastery and adjoining school. The buildings were constructed to accommodate an increase in religious followers during the 17th century.

Guatemala was a stop on our cruise ship so we signed up for a Blue Planet shore excursion which drove us 2 hours to Antigua. There are so many sites to visit in this beautiful city including the Arco de Santa Catalina. The Arch was built in the 1690s so cloistered nuns could walk from the convent to the school without having to cross the streets of the city. You can see the Agua Volcano in the background as you stand under the arch. I highly recommend a short visit for some great pictures.

This arch is something you cannot miss if you are walking in Antigua. The story is that a convent demanded that the street be closed down so the Nuns could cross without being seen. A compromise was reached by building this building, which features a covered walkway over the street. It is picturesque from both angles, each featuring a different volcano in the backgroubd,

Yes, it's a must see in Antigua, mostly because it's the best known land mark in Antigua. It's a quick stop (10 minutes) to get a few good photos. Both a night shot and a day shot, of the arch framing one of the nearby volcanoes, will be great additions to your memories of Antigua. The street you are on typically has a few artists sketching, painting, and selling their works.

This may be an unpopular opinion but this attraction is overrated. Once you take your picture there's not much to do here. Coffee shops and restaurants around the place are overpriced and don't get me started on the "native craft" shops. Yes, it's a symbol of Guatemala, and yes Vulcan de Agua looks impressive looming above but in the end it's only good for a few minutes then you will move on.

This is a very accessible and colorful as well as well preserved part of the history of the city. Nice for framing photographs of the mountains. But not much description of it’s a struggle important, or access to the walkway itself. But if you are here for more than a day you can’t miss it.

Not much going on in the streets of Antigua before 8 AM. In fact it is hard to find a place open for breakfast. But if you want a beautiful unobstructed view and photo of the Arch, go early. The street is mobbed in the early evening.

Gorgeous piece of architecture. It's definitely a must see when in Antigua. Try and go super early in the morning or late at night. During the day, even during COVID, it's got lots of people hustling and bustling about.

The best time to see this is on the weekends when the street is closed to cars. There’s still opportunities to take a good picture but perhaps a little less dangerous. Lots of great shops to check out on both sides of the street. Make sure to take pictures in both directions.

One of those spots you can’t avoid seeing, incredibly iconic and well located. For nice photos, I highly recommend going around sunrise when no one around. Right underneath the arch there’s a little wine shop that’s well worth the stop as well.
