This is a beautiful centrally located shaded park full of vendors which is the good news and bad news. We met here as part of our Blue Planet Tour after a two hour bus ride from our cruise ship docked in Puerto Quetzal. The park is a good jumping off point for a stroll through the city visiting the sites and eating some great local food. The vendors in the park are plentiful, but a bit obnoxious as there are so many and even when you’re in a group they surround you and won’t leave you alone. I recommend a visit to the park as it is shaded and there are places to sit, but be prepared for street vendors all over you!

If you're in the shopping mood, find Ruth!! She speaks English well, if that is important, and will treat you fairly on prices. The park on a Friday or Saturday evening (before dark) is a wonderful time to take in some Guatemalan culture and family time. We always felt safe there during daylight hours - we had younger family with us and didn't venture out after dark, so can't speak for that.

The Plaza Mayor or the Parque Central is a lively center of Old Antigua. It is surrounded by grand architecture and filled with people both foreign and native. I especially liked the Mayas who came down from the surrounding villages to sell their wares in the city. Always dressed in their super colorful, native garb, they are one of the major reasons to visit Antigua, since no other place has as many native Americans as does Guatemala.

The Parque central is the best please to chill with your friends, in the afternoons the park is a little full but personality I like more at night, at night the are no merchant, there is no a lot people, probably you would see group of friends singing, playing music, or just laughing. The best time to go is on Christmas cause the park is decorated with lights it is wonderful to see. Other days to go is on Saturdays and Sundays because there is a group of music that goes and play a wonderful instrumental music.

At the old town of "Santiago de los Caballeros" (the actual "Antigua"), the Spanish conquerors built, as they traditionally did in Spain itself and throughout the Americas, a central square. Here, it is known as "Parque Central", or "Plaza Mayor", a major gathering point and focus of social life for its inhabitants and visitors. At its center, the beautiful "Fuente de las Sirenas" ("Fountain of the Mermaids", in English). At its sides, superb colonial structures, such as the "Catedral de San José" (sided by the ruins of the old "Catedral Primada de Santiago de los Caballeros"), the "Palacio Real de los Capitanes Generales" (the former headquarters of the Spanish government for all Central America), the "Palacio del Ayuntamiento" (the City Hall), the "Portal de las Panaderas" (with historic buildings and old houses) and the "Museo de Santiago de los Caballeros" (the local museum). It is impossible to miss "Parque Central" at any visit to Antigua. Famous "Arco de Santa Catalina" and the impressive "Iglesia de la Merced" are just a few steps away. Enjoy!

Central Park is a great place people watching or feeding pigeons. There are plenty of vendors that try and get a top price for their goods do you have to bargain hard to get a reasonable price. It's the best place in Antigua people watching sit down on a bench feed the pigeons and enjoy it

My recommendation is to go early in the morning before it gets crowded! Grab yourself a cup of coffee of Atole (sold by a vendor near the park) and enjoy the serenity of sitting on a park bench watching the world go by. People walk their dogs there, read the newspaper, and play with children. Later in the day it gets more crowded and more vendors arrive, but the park never loses it's calm. Definitely worth checking out, if for no other reason than to observe the raunchy fountain ;)

every day that i was in antigua i would make my way to the central park and sit on the benches and watch the local sellers and the tourists interact. it was a fun place to go daily and watch how the crowd differs on the week days and the weekends. Lots of pigeons, lots of young kids selling pigeon food, lots of crafty ladies selling souveniers, a good place to meet locals and chat in spanish.

The park is a great place to sit and hang out. We enjoy grabbing a bench and just watching the people go by. You do get asked by the locals if you want to buy their wares from time to time, but they really do not bother you. Great place to meet as well since it is centrally located.

The is the central park of Guatemala. Of course it is filled with tourists and venders, but it is lively, colorful, and beautiful. Possibly because we stay longer than the normal weekend visitors we are fortunate to experience the many faces of the park. Quiet weekday moments, bright and lively evenings and bustling weekends.
