Me and a friend hiked Acatenango through OX Adventures guide services and have a blast. The guides were amazing and I would recommend paying them the extra fee to take your packs to the campsite (that and the hiking sticks were worth every penny and more). The hike itself is very physically and mentally challenging but absolutely amazing at the summit and watching Fuego Volcano erupt throughout the night is a surreal experience. We were in a group of about 8 people counting the guides. Having an excellent dinner and wine around the campfire after a long day hiking was unforgettable with all the eruptions and crystal clear view of all the stars from 13K feet. I would definitely recommend training as best as you can before taking this hike but it is definitely doable without specific training. A few of us were former collegiate athletes who had been removed for years and were able to still enjoy the entire hike. The guides were very personable and encouraging. I would definitely do this hike again and recommend other adventurist and hiking enthusiast to make this trip as well!

As a solo female traveller I joined a group of 7 people for an overnight tour to Acatenango, and I had the MOST INCREDIBLE time. I'm glad I picked namely GT Adventures Guatemala, and I was beyond lucky to have Alberto as a tour guide. Alberto was simply awesome. He is very knowledgeable, he kept the group at a manageable pace, while sharing history and wildlife information. If it wasn't for his encouragement and genuine sense of humor, I don't think I would have made it to the top! The food was good and plenty, and the gear was in good condition. We were very lucky with the weather and Fuego put on a lovely show for us while we sat by the fire talking and roasting marshmallows. I highly recommend GT Adventures Guatemala. They are super professional, they have better prices than most agencies in Antigua, and their guides (Alberto in particular) do a great job. - very good gear - their gear is at the base camp, so you do not need to carry it. - you have to carry your own water - they also give you gloves, jackets, beanies, I even got a head light from the tour guide. - for me as a woman the food was enough. - they were super accurate and professional from the pick up to the dropp off. - their prices are very low compared to other agencies in Antigua. I personally paid 225Q + 50Q entrance fee.
