This was our first visit to Martha’s Vineyard and it would have gone better with more planning on our part. We were pleased with the ferry ride from Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven. We had to park some distance from the ferry since we were not taking our car. This was not a problem though because there is a shuttle and a dedicated bike path. We chose to take the three-and-a-half-mile bike path which passed through some nice scenery and led us right up to the ferry. The ferry staff helpfully shepherded us and our bikes on the boat.

After arriving at Vineyard Haven, it took us close to an hour to find a bike path along County Road and Edgartown/Vineyard Haven Road, which was not particularly scenic. By the time we made some headway toward Edgartown, it was time to turn back and I had run out of energy. It would have been helpful if there were a bike path directly from the Vineyard Haven port or clear signage at regular intervals leading us to the bike paths. Regarding more positive aspects of the trip, it was interesting to see the residential neighborhoods and farms along the bike path. It was a surprise to see that normal people live on this island as I had imagined it was mostly a resort area. If I visit MV again, which I hope I do, I would take the ferry to Oak Bluffs to see the Gingerbread houses and take the Beach Road bike path to Edgartown from there.

Beautiful

I had a great weekend at Martha’s Vineyard, it was my first time there and I went with my boyfriend on a romantic weekend. The weather was nice on Sunday but a bit cloudy on Saturday ( it rain this past Saturday night). We ve learned that it’s not that near Boston, and end up getting there by 4:30 pm on Saturday instead of earlier in the day to do more stuff, but it was great. It’s truly majestic, I am def gonna be back. We didn’t take a car so we used lift and public transportation and that worked great. We ended up doing some lighthouses tours and tried couple different restaurants like the famous “black dog” which is literally a block away ( or two ) from when you get off at the marina on Vineyard hacen when you first get to the island.

Always a pleasure to look out at the boats and sit in the marina at Martha's Vineyard to watch the comings and goings of all the travelers.

Skip Vineyard Haven & go to Oaks Bluff!
Aug 2017 • Family
There are 2 ports for ferries to Martha's Vineyard from Cape Cod: Vineyard Haven and Oaks Bluff. Oaks Bluff is a much nicer town, with a gorgeous park (on the water). I wish I had not listened to prior Trip Advisor reviews. VH's Main Street is quaint but it's not in the water. VH's claim to fame is the Black Dog Bakery/Tavern/clothing stores. The food is good, but the blond woman at the bakery would not allow my daughter to use the restroom even though we were eating lunch there, she directed her to the municipal bathrooms which were disgusting. Turns out, there was a bathroom on the Black Dog compound, as we figured out after we ate lunch and shopped at the BD compound (there is a bakery/lunch place, adult 2 clothing stores, 1 childrens clothing store and a tavern/restaurant on the BD compound). She was Very rude and not empathetic, whatsoever. We walked around Vineyard Haven and Ubered to a light house. It was a very pretty vista but small and not well taken care of. It was not open at 2pm on a Wed. afternoon, their website states they are open from 12pm-5pm. Disappointing. We decided to take the public bus #13 which provided amazing views of the shore and brought us to Oaks Bluff and Edgarstown, both beautiful and quaint, New England, MV-esque towns. I wish I had taken the ferry into Oaks Bluff and hung out there the whole afternoon. Thankfully, the public bus gave us a nice, affordable, ($1.25 each, round trip) tour of Martha's Vineyard. Oaks Bluff and Edgarstown were amazingly beautiful. I could have easily skipped Black Dog too. Black Dog merchandise is very expensive. They have an incredible marketing team that are very successful in selling their brand, merchandise, and logo.

On the water

We stayed on Martha's Vineyard at the Vineyard shaven Marina. It was a protected calm area with beautiful views of the harbor sailboats, yachts and powerboats. We enjoyed a fabulous time including the private dining area of Garde East for yacht guests only.

The best place to park your yacht!!!

I work on yachts and have been lucky to stay at marina's all up and down the US east coast. This place is by far my favorite. Liz and her son Joe have been running it for over 20 years. They have a handful of young dockhands who are the most attentive and hard working kids I've experienced. You step off the property and you are right there in the town of Tisbury, home to the famous Black Dog restaurant. For $2.50 thr bus will take you to Oak Bluff which is a bit mire actice than Tisbury. Plus the marina has the Pilot House bar, it's byob or serve yourself and just leave cash in the jar on your honor. It's beautifully decorated like you would imagine an old N.E. boathouse would be. There's are pool and fuseball tables, a dart board and some lounge chairs. Great place for crew to escape when they aren't allowed to leave the property. We spent the weekend and almost cried when it was time to leave, it felt as comfortable and welcoming as being home.

Screwed Over

I made a reservation in April online. I received an email that had the words "Confirmation" and "Everything is in Good Order" in the email only to find out 2 weeks before my trip that this was not my confirmation email. In addition, they put your Credit Card number for all to see in the email as well.

They acknowledged receiving my original request but had no answer as to why it was not processed and ultimately told me to go look elsewhere for dock space.

Never go back again.
