We took the bus from downtown Nantucket ($3 in cash each way) and it was an easy 20 minute ride to the town of Sconset. There's a cute general store and a public bathroom at the bus stop, and it's a quick walk to the beach (that has portapoties). It's a beautiful beach, but the surf is pretty strong so not great for swimming. A very nice way to spend a few hours!

Rode bikes to the beach after seeing the lighthouse. Sat down on the sand and enjoyed a fairly empty beach on a Sunday evening. Saw numerous seals stick their heads out of the water to scan the beach. Very enjoyable.

As a couple, early May,we drove bikes from downtown Nantucket, about 10 miles along the very picturesque Polpis Rd bike path to reach the beach. No real signs along the way but you know you're close when you see the Sakaty Lighthouse as you bike or drive past the golf-course. The 'town' consists of a Post- Office(open) and a Country Market store which was closed as this was off- season. As you get to the roundabout, you go left by the Post Office and downhill and voila, there is the beach. It truly was jaw dropping, the most beautiful blue color and the clean tan sand, shells, a bit of seaweed, no litter anywhere. We dropped off and locked our bikes and searched for the elusive start of the almost 1 and 1/2 mile cliff walk footpath. As we searched for a bit, we saw a tiny path at the edge of a lawn on the hill with a small sign stating it was the end of the path, but since we were going south to north, for us it was the start. The walk is easy and the sea is always in full view as you walk along the edge of peoples' lawns admiring their beautiful/ unique houses. Sometimes you walk through groups of trees, shrubs, flowers and see private wooden walkways leading down to the beach which are quite far above as you walk along. We literally could not stop taking photos, it was that gorgeous. We walked to the end, cut down to the beach,so clean, took off our shoes and walked back along the soft sand. We literally did not see one other soul the approximate 2 hours we spent there, it felt like we owned it! This was the highlight of our 4 day Nantucket visit!

It was our first time on Nantucket so we had to take the bus out to Siasconset from downtown Nantucket to get the whole island experience. After the quick bus ride our first destination was Siasconset Beach and we gave it its fair due by staying close to two hours, but after having a great experience at Jetties Beach we did not like it as much. There is a house with an actual sundial on one of its sides as you walk towards the beach, so this was pretty cool to see. While expansive, there was more sea remains left on the beach than we would have liked and it was not as pretty as we had hoped. One bonus was we saw a sea lion less than fifteen yards from shore and they kept bobbing up and down and in and out of the waves; after having been to Hawaii and seeing the seals it was great to see a sea lion. We tried the bluff walk after the beach, and again did not love it, I guess we were looking for more of a hike. Before the bus ride back we did get ice cream at the small market in town (Gifford’s of Maine, yes!) and what a delicious treat it was. If you have never been to Siasconset it is worth the four hour excursion so you know what you or might not miss, this way allowing yourself not to second guess yourself saying, “Should we have gone out to Sconset?!”

We've been visiting Nantucket every summer since 1981 and this one is only my second walk on what is called The Bluff or Siasconset Bluff Walk. The first time was over 25 years ago and wow, what a change. Still BEAUTIFUL but the beach erosion is incredible. Vanity Fair wrote an interesting article about how Nantucket and Malibu are handling the same problem in different ways (just google "VF magazine article on beach erosion in Nantucket" to read it and see photos of areas we couldn't get near this year. We didn't start at the beach but just parked outside the small general store in "downtown" Siaconset and headed right toward the water and asked a gentleman where the entrance was and it wasn't far at all. The trail is owned by the Land Trust so is open to the public. Maybe someone else mentioned this but basically walking so close to some of the most beautiful homes on the island did not appear to be an issue or problem with any of the owners (unlike the Cliff Walk in Newport, RI and other like walks). I was told that there is a "competition" of sorts among the owners in an attempt to make their yards and gardens the prettiest and it was a tough call. I took a few photos (will post them) but we only walked maybe less than a half mile (not good on distances!) before a sign apaearedthat said that there was no further walking allowed. I had thought we had gone way too short of a way. We couldn't even see the Sankaty Lighthouse which the town moved back from the edge in or around 2005 but I'm sure if we had started at the far end, we could have seen more of the bluff. We planned to do that but time got away. Next year, for sure!

The trail to Siasconset is a perfect bike ride. Once you get to the beach, there are beautiful places to explore. Wonderful gardens, and a nice little town. There is a very casual place called Claudette's to get breakfast, sandwiches, etc.

We took the 'bus' out to 'sconset and stayed about an hour. It's gorgeous. The houses are beautiful, there are just a few little cafes and a general store right in downtown. We sat on the beach for a little while and at a snack and then walked around. There are public bathrooms near the 'downtown' and even those were nice! The 'bus' cost $2 each way.

Find the Bluff Walk. It is hidden, but public. You get to walk the bluff in public right of way through the back yards of mansions. Very strange, but google "Sconset bluff walk" to see how to get there. Not to be missed. Bertie the cat is likely to greet you at some point and walk with you for a ways.

The cliff walk that takes you through the lovely homes back yards with outstanding views of the ocean! Can be muddy in some spots, so wear boots!

Saw so many seals playing the rolling surf! This beach is always gorgeous. The best time of year to go is in late fall when nobody is there.
