Several trails, well marked, are of moderate challenge. There are a few streams to ford. You get the feel of being out in the wilderness, or at least as much as you can find in Massachusetts. Ponds, ledge, streams, old ox paths. Nice spot. Surrounded by orchards and farms. A Trustees property.

Bear Swamp is a property of the Trustees of Reservations, located in Ashfield. It is comprised of 312 acres that includes several trails that form a couple of loops with the assistance of a map that you can print online or find in a kiosk at the main trail head and parking area on Hawley Road. Do not go if you feel the need bag a mountain summit or to reach a spectacular view. Bear Swamp will provide you with a good 2-3 hours of hiking over moderate terrain, and it rewards those who take the time to absorb their surroundings by presenting them with a variety of small wonders.

Part of the Trustees of Reservations, Bear Swamp has well marked trails (medium rugged) with much wildlife, especially birds. You feel a million miles from civilization. Bring a map and water.

I'm visiting all of the Trustees locations. This one was a bit less clearly marked than some. We got a bit turned on the Beaver brook trail. Nice woods and scenic pond.

I went here with a birding group. The hike was short but the pond area was fabulous. It was great to see newts and salamanders in the pond as well as little fish.

As we entered the hiking path off the road we heard a crash and saw 2 black bears hurrying down a tree a hundred feet ahead of us. They went one way and we went the other.
