We booked Margaret’s Bird Finder tour through Baunti Escapes and it was one of the highlights of our tour. Margaret is an ex-ranger and the author of the definitive book on Norfolk Island’s birds. She is also an excellent communicator. Our group of six that day ranged from experienced bird watchers to mildly interested, and all of us found plenty to interest us. During our ramble through the national park area we focused not only on the bird life but on the flora of the area and something of its history during World War 2. We also visited Margaret’s property, which gave us the opportunity to see the masked booby colony that nests there - wonderful to watch the big fluffy chicks with the adult birds! We also explored the coastal area and its birdlife. Margaret is generous with her time and we had a happy 5 hours with her. A memorable experience!

Margaret Christian tour guide is very informative not just birds but fauna and history as well. If you are a bird watcher you will be delighted. Very nice tour, highly recommend. Nice small group of 10 people including Margaret, just perfect.

Our tour guide, Margaret Christian, had so much knowledge and was so willing to share it. I learnt so much about birds in general as well as about the particular endemic bords of Norfolk Island. Well worth doing this tour.

We did not see an awful lot of birds on our tour with Margaret but we did learn a lot about the ecology of Norfolk Island and about life more generally on the island. The tour started at 8.00 and was supposed to finish by 12.30 but we didn't get back till 2.00 pm. No-one in the group complained. Most of that time we were in Margaret's small van, and by the end I was feeling cramped and very happy to get out. A little more time out of the van and on the track would have been appreciated. We did take one walk along a track on the flanks of Mt Banks in the National Park and that was excellent - spotted lots of small forest birds (fantales, gerygones, and the NI whistler, subspecies of Golden Whistler). No sightings of Green Parrots unfortunately and did hear a Scarlet Robin though I didn't see it. Highlight at least for Margaret was a distant sighting of a long-tailed cuckoo, a rare visitor, one of which she had not seen on NI for about 7 years. My other highlight was being up close to a family group of Masked Boobies near Duncombe Bay. Margaret supplied morning tea, followed by plenty of chat about life and times on Norfolk Island. Margaret was formerly an NI National Parks ranger and I suspect she is as knowledgeable (and thoughtful) as anyone when it comes to NI, and not just its natural history. While in the end the tour lasted close to 6 hours, not all was 'quality time' and I thought it expensive at $100 a head. And I thought the time driving around Kingston / Emily Bay was pretty well a waste.

Lovely morning with the fascinating Margaret and her welcoming hospitality in and around beautiful Norfolk. A tour packed with insights into the natural history and ecology of the island and it was very special to appreciate the wildlife through Margaret’s experienced eyes and listen carefully to what she had to say. Binoculars well worth bringing. Great value for money I thought.

This was my first bird tour. Margaret was extremely knowledgeable and this was a very small group tour, no giant busses or large numbers of people. It was personal with plenty of opportunity for questions. A high level of fitness is not required. It was slow ans leisurely. Bring your own binoculars. Highly recommend one of the best tours on the island.

Margate’s knowledge of Norfolk’s natural environment and the history of its management and recovery is unparalleled. Our tour with her was a highlight of our holiday and her knowledge of the bird life, and the personal commitment she has made to improving bird colonies in the island, made our whole trip so much richer

An absolutely fabulous small group tour led by a passionate, knowledgeable and delightful Islander. Margaret's knowledge of the flora and bird life is, I suspect, second to none. From the delightful stroll up Mt Pitt to the stunning views from her own magnificent property where we had time for morning tea to just chill and watch the ocean from the cliff top this was a tour to remember.

I'm interested in seeing and learning about the local fauna of anywhere I travel to without specifically being a bird watcher or having any real knowledge of birds. I enjoy photographing flora and fauna when I travel as well. I found Margaret to be very knowledgeable of both the flora and fauna of Norfolk Island and conservation/sustainability in general. While the tour went for 4.5 hours it was not strenuous at all and could be undertaking by anyone capable of walking on slightly uneven, gently sloping ground. In hindsight I would have liked to have visited other parts of the national park in addition to the one visited to potentially see more birds. We didn't see a lot of birds in the Mt Pitt area but when my husband and I walked other tracks later we encountered more birds. I did however love seeing the masked boobies on Margaret's property and you won't see them anywhere else on Norfolk. I would have liked the opportunity to get out of the van more to take photos rather than just sitting in the van listening to Margaret talk. I realize this could cause the duration to drag out so may make the tour less manageable. Overall I thought the tour was interesting and worthwhile doing.

If you are into birds, or simply want to imbibe Norfolk’s natural history, then don’t miss out on this half day tour. Margaret Christian’s knowledge extends not just to birds, but to plants and the island’s history as well.
She will meet you in her minibus at the visitor’s centre and take you across Norfolk in search of birds. While you aren’t guaranteed to spot the iconic green parrot, you are bound to hear and see a number of natives and are given tips on how and where to find them. Expect to spend about as much time in the mini bus as on foot.
Tours run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays but are subject to cancellation due to bad weather. They include a copy of Margaret’s book, a tea break (yummy home made cake and all) and sharing her years of experience tracking and studying Norfolk’s birds and plants. The tours don’t exceed ten people and cost A$100 per person and run from 8.00 am to 12.30... or later (they are laid back here and no-one is keeping an eye on the clock).
Tips: book a tour at the beginning of your stay in Norfolk as that way you’ll be able to return to the places where the latest sightings have been made. Sit at the front of the bus to benefit from the best photo-opportunities. If botany is your thing, then don’t miss this tour, plants are Margaret’s thing too.
Thanks again for a most informative tour.
