Highly recommend to anyone spending some time in Skopje. There's a local bus in Skopje that goes direct to the entrance of the Canyon. Single bus ticket can be bought inside the bus, maybe not every driver sell it (as there were some travellers complaining they couldn't get the ticket inside with the driver).
Reasonably easy hike up the montain, but the way down to the lake can be slippery due to the small stones. Beautiful views and the lake's color was beautiful. We had a boat trip to the cave (not that impressed by the cave itself), but we got to know that in summertime you can dive there.

Very nice peace of nature. Dam was built on the river Treska back in 30s. You can have a long walk by the lake (it is a bit slippery or rough in some parts, make sure to wear proper shoes for hiking), have a break at the cafe-restaurant and take a boat ride.
We didn’t take a ride, but we were told that the right pick would be a longer and a bit more expensive ride which makes stop at the cave by the lake.
If you get there a bit earlier (till 11 AM) even on the weekend, there shouldn’t be problem with the parking (at least in May)

If you're in or around Skopje, you absolutely must go spend at least half a day at Lake Matka! The place is just absolutely spectacular, with stunning views of the Canyon and mountains. Takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the entrance, but well worth it!

We took a short one hour boat tour to the underground caves, which was pretty cool. We then rented a few kayaks and enjoyed the views all around. The little restaurant/Cafe located on the river is also a must do. This is such a peaceful and zen type of place, where you can disconnect from the pace of the city.

When we got to the cave we got out of the boat and there were some stairs to climb to get to the entrance. Once we go there he turned on the generator and gave us all a chance to take in the depths of the cave while standing. To get into the cave we walked down a flight of stairs. It would have been pitch-black but the generator was turned on to power many colorful lights that lit up the inside of the cave.

There were both stalactites (rock formations that grow down from the cave ceiling) and stalagmites (rock formations that grow up from the cave floor). One of the stalactites looked like a giant pine cone. In the roof of the cave we could see a bat flying around. Below the platform that we were standing on was another lake. This area was roped off for safely. Outside of the cave is an underground cave that shoots bubbles up to the surface. This is one of the deepest underground caves in the world; and at least the deepest in the Balkans.

If you've ever been through the Danube gorge between Serbia and Romania, it's quite similar, although this one is much smaller. A boat ride with a stop by Vrelo cave
takes about an hour all in all (with about 35-40 mins spent on the water). Cost is 400 denars per person. One boat can accommodate up to 20 people.

Vrelo cave is one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe and the world (it is a must see!). Of course you will be exploring only the bit above the ground, so no worries. Interesting fact: its deepest point hasn't been reached yet.

The boat trip lasts about half an hour. You pay only 2 euros. You are asked to wear a life-jacket. The boat is motorized and holds about fifteen people. The view is simply amazing! I haven't seen anything like this. Don't forget to take a jacket with you because of the moisture of the lake.

Matka Canyon is a very popular destination for tourists and locals alike. I had wanted to take the one-hour cruise that included the caves. They were only offering the ½ hour tour from the first boat launch, which we took. Nice ride the scenery was interesting. Cruise only cost 200 MKD ($3.20). It was disappointing to see all the trash and debris scattered about the area. Suggest you take a cab from Skopje and have the driver come back for you at a set time. We did this and it only cost 2,000 MKD, about $35. Well worth it.

This is truly a worthwhile visit. It's certainly nature at it's best with a fabulous canyon, beautiful looking water and fabulous rock formations and caves along it's route. You can hire boats, kayaks and pedalos to venture out in yourself but I walked the canyon trail to the side of the lake which can be read in a separate review. Not to be missed

This power dam lake with high mountain walls is very scenic. Boat tours (including cave visit) are offered from one shore where there are also some restaurants with good pasta dishes. Public toilets are below par.

Matka Lake and canyon is a very picturesque area. Come armed with your bathing suit, the water is very cold but great for a dip. A couple of restaurant options and boats, canoes and so on available for hire. Bit of a rubbish road to get to the top and it is very busy on summer weekends; and unfortunately a fair bit of rubbish about. But still worth the visit.
