Very nice peace of nature. Dam was built on the river Treska back in 30s. You can have a long walk by the lake (it is a bit slippery or rough in some parts, make sure to wear proper shoes for hiking), have a break at the cafe-restaurant and take a boat ride.
We didn’t take a ride, but we were told that the right pick would be a longer and a bit more expensive ride which makes stop at the cave by the lake.
If you get there a bit earlier (till 11 AM) even on the weekend, there shouldn’t be problem with the parking (at least in May)

If you've ever been through the Danube gorge between Serbia and Romania, it's quite similar, although this one is much smaller. A boat ride with a stop by Vrelo cave
takes about an hour all in all (with about 35-40 mins spent on the water). Cost is 400 denars per person. One boat can accommodate up to 20 people.
Vrelo cave is one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe and the world (it is a must see!). Of course you will be exploring only the bit above the ground, so no worries. Interesting fact: its deepest point hasn't been reached yet.

Went on a weekday so it wasn't too crowded. Nice path along the lake going up to where the cave is. There were a couple of restaurants so we were able to stop and get coffee and take a break. Very nice nature and peaceful especially when it isn't too crowded.

A short bus ride (approx 45 mins) out of the city centre on bus 60 and we arrived a short walk from the canyon water.
We enjoyed strolling along the paths and then kayaking in the calm water.

The lake is absolutely beautiful, and so are the restaurants and monasteries around there - and the boat ride to the cave is certainly a highlight not to be missed. It does get very busy at the lake, parking is difficult (even access via taxi) so there's plenty of walking and it gets hot! But regardless, don't miss it!

Matka Lake and canyon is a very picturesque area. Come armed with your bathing suit, the water is very cold but great for a dip. A couple of restaurant options and boats, canoes and so on available for hire. Bit of a rubbish road to get to the top and it is very busy on summer weekends; and unfortunately a fair bit of rubbish about. But still worth the visit.

We are planning to visit Skopje and the canyon at the beginning of November. Are there boat trips all year around and where I can find the timetable? Is it doable with an 1-year old baby? Not hiking of course, but when taxi drops us off it should be easy to get to the boat I hope, no climbing required etc. Any access with baby pram? Thank you in advance for the answers!

Hello, I’m not sure if they do it all year round, but there is a website i think it was matkacanyon or something, maybe there is better info.
There is a short walk, 200m, from taxi drop off to the boats, we went to the second boat stop, not the first, and the walk is ok with pram, might be a bit narrow, but accessible.
Boats go every hour or so, no timetable. There is a cafe restaurant where you can wait for next boat.
Be mindful that the boatride might be cold as hell!! We went in September 25C and I was freeeeeeezing!

How reliable is bus no. 60? And is there a corruption ongoing between public buses and taxi drivers?

Yes it is reliable, I recommend using the app JPS which is the public transport for Skopje. There you have live tracking of the busses and you will know when it is coming and where. Check online for explanation on how to change the settings for English. It is very easy. I recommend it.

Hi, to use the bus from Matka to central Skopje, is it possible to pay directly the driver or you have to buy a travel card? If i have to use the travel card, can I buy it from Skopje's Airport or from Matka Canyon hotel? TY

Just jump on the bus and ask if you can pay on the the bus. The answer will be no but the driver will let you go with the bus anyhow.
Hello what is the price of canoe for two person?
