Recently returned from a fabulous trip to eastern North Macedonia, western Bulgaria and northern Greece exploring the culture, food and wine from the region with some friends. What a beautiful area largely unknown to many tourists which is a shame since it has so much to offer. Great history, delicious food and wine and the best tour guide on the planet in Jane. Who could ask for anything more? If you want to get off the beaten path and explore a more intimate side of the Balkans then I can't recommend this tour and especially Macedonia enough. They are the best.

I spent 8 days touring Macedonia in September with Jane and Macedonia Experience. I cannot say enough good things about my trip. I would find it hard to believe that there is any better tour company in Macedonia. The trip started with driver Dean meeting me at the airport and transferring me to a hotel in Scopje. Later that night Jane (pronounced Yawnee) met me and took me to the first of many meals at a restaurant frequented by locals with not a tourist in sight. The next day we toured Scopje and went to lunch at a restaurant that was so far off the beaten path that I wondered where the heck we were going. It ended up being one of the best lunches I can recall with two different servings of lamb that was without a doubt the best lamb I have ever had. We left Scopje the next day in a really nice van and stopped at the Matka Canyon on the way to Lake Ohrid. The tour of Ohrid the next day was incredible as Macedonia Experience hired a local archeologist and professor to give me a tour of the historical sites of Ohrid. The tour and information provided was remarkable. And after the tour we drove outside Ohrid to an amazing little restaurant in the hills overlooking the lake for a lunch with possibly the best stuffed pepper I have ever eaten. The next day we hopped aboard a private chartered boat for a trip around Lake Ohrid. We stopped at the Bay of Bones Museum and of course the Monastery of St. Naum with a boat trip around the lovely little springs of St. Naum. Jane, of course, knew a boatman and the trip could not have been better. On the way back to Ohrid, we stopped at a lakeside restaurant where Jane knew the owner. We were treated like family and the trout lunch was truly spectacular. That night, we ended up driving to a village in the mountains outside Ohrid for a wonderful dinner at a small family run restaurant where few if any tourists visit. We left Ohrid the next day and visited the amazing Heraclea Lyncestis. If you are a fans of Roman ruins this place is for you. We spent a bit of time in Bitola and then visited a couple monasteries before ending the day at Marko’s Fortress. (It was a long hike to the top and probably the most tiring day.) On my last full day in Macedonia we went to amazing Stobi ruins (again if you are a fan of Roman ruins this is another place for you) and then on to the Tikves wine region where we spent the better part of the afternoon at a small boutique winery (actually a gentleman’s house where he had built a winery). The wines and food served in the little courtyard were absolutely perfect. It was such a one of a kind experience that only locals like Jane and Macedonia Experience can put together for you. I have left out many, many other things because there is simply not enough space to describe the awesomeness that I experienced during my trip to Macedonia all thanks to Jane and Macedonia Experience. If you are planning a trip to this wonderful country look no further than the folks at Macedonia Experience. You will not find anyone better. (And if your want to read more about my experiences in Macedonia, I blogged my entire trip at lawyerchick92blog.com.). It was an amazing one of a kind trip and worth every penny.

Wow, what an experience! Our tour guides Jane and Bojan were phenomenal. They drove us through the gorgeous country of Macedonia, through the mountains and the greenery, we visited villages off the beaten track to experience homegrown foods and cooked meals in peoples homes. Macedonian’s are very warm and welcoming people and it makes the travel a lot more pleasant. Jane explained everything along the way and is very knowledgeable about the whole Balkan area and his English is spot on. We visited the lovely old town of Bitola and also Lake Ohrid. What a lake! It’s clean, we swam, sailed, and traveled by boat to restaurants along the lake to get fresh fish caught in the lake. What a foodie experience! Organic food only, we all felt like a million bucks eating this good food. Ohrid has an old beautiful city. We visited many archeological sites around the country that were thousands of years old. No need to fight the crowds like you do in Italy and Greece to see the sites. Macedonia is rich in history and everyone should visit. The balkans are a very affordable area to travel in and you get bang for your buck. We visited wineries, museums, national parks and canyons. The capital Skopje is a beautiful city, it’s very clean and full of historical statues that give the city a lot of presence. All through our holiday we were looked after exceptionally well by MKD experience. We can’t fault them for anything, they made it a perfect holiday for us. We mentioned to Jane one day that we really like the Macedonian gypsy musicians and as a surprise one evening as we were having a dinner by the lake, a music group came to play for us! This is what MKD experience do, it’s the small touches that make all of the difference. I can’t recommend MKD Experience and the country of Macedonia more highly. Holiday of a lifetime we will never forget and we will be visiting more often with MKD by our side. They will cater for any type of holiday you want and are very easy going.

Macedonian experience is an awesome tour company. We took two individual excursions: to the north of Northern Macedonia (Kokino, Church of St. George and Tomba Madzheri) and national parks: Matka Canyon and Mavrovo National Park (visiting Lake Mavrovo and Duf waterfall). Both excursions were organized perfectly. In Kokino they called a guide who conducted an interesting excursion for us, opened a closed church and also conducted a detailed tour. The place for dinner is also incomparable. It is in the national style, with mountain views and very tasty cuisine. It was a perfect trip. The second tour was without a guide (agreed), but all our requirements were implemented, for example, they found a part of the river that could be photographed). The company agrees with all implementors in advance so that everything can be done very quickly and efficiently.
