- Frostywasp999Marlow, United Kingdom244 contributionsImpressive castle walls, shame about the absence of maintenance and decay. Castle looks stunning when viewed from the centre of Skopje, an inner and outer curtain wall gives the impression of a major structure internally. A walk up there provides the option to walk the walls which provide sumptous views over the city, stadium and to the Millenium tower on the mountain behind the city. However, the viewing platforms are falling down and dangerioius! The internal site has been let go completely and is probably dangeriouus, as scrub and trees are recolonising. Desperatly needs money spending on it to stop further decay.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2024
- Marek BocanekBrno, Czech Republic504 contributionsThis is a great place not only for history lovers to see the city as well as to see the construction of defensive objects and sites. The walls are still preserved, albeit the interior not much. You must enter only from the northern side.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 25, 2024
- Jim HEurope3,943 contributionsIt's fantastic to be at the fortress which was built in the 6th century. It's history and should be appreciated. You can walk the walls and climb a few of the towers. The fortress moat bridge and tower steps have deteriorated greatly since I was here 4 years ago. It's become overgrown with weeds and trees. The entry is free, but it's a pity the fortress isn't being maintained.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten August 24, 2024
- Mare STrieste, Italy7 contributionsAmazing view and nice green escape for a walk and picture taking. It has free entry. There are unfortunately many unused and not safe parts in the fortress. The skeleton of the unfinished building destroyed the impression inside the fortress. Sloppy local government at its best.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 11, 2024
- Dimitris GAthens, Greece1,127 contributionsUnfortunately they have not taken care of it and have left it to the fate of the castle! One of the few sights of the city and unfortunately they have left it to their luck. Lots of garbage inside. Without ticket the entrance. You see a big part of the city!Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 5, 2025

This fortress looks amazing from the roadside as it's perimeter walls are still mainly intact. They're made up of thousands of small rocks that must have taken an eternity to build. Inside there's a stone walkway along the perimeter wall which has been added on at a later date for tourists. The main turrets are not accessible but the smaller ones can be climbed to gain views of the city. Inside the fortress are small ruins here and there but not much else

Probably built around the 6th century, this fortress is located at the highest point of the city directly on the Vardar River. It was partly destroyed by the 1963 earthquake and excavations are still underway which have led to the discovery of wind instruments and clay ornaments dating back thousands of years, as well as the foundations of a 13th century church and the largest collection of Byzantine coins never found in Macedonia.
Currently you can walk along the restored fortress walls, which extend for about 120 meters and climb up some turrets.

The fortress is an impressive landmark of Skopje from which you can see many things and take great photos (especially during the sunset). However, it seemed that the development project of the territory has stopped since there are unfinished buildings and locked towers. There were also quite a lot of empty bottles and other things lying on the ground. Despite the above-mentioned, the views, impressions, and feelings you can get are still worth the time spent.

It could be the main attraction of the city but it seems that a dispute between Albanians and Macedonians has blocked the restoration and maintenance works. You go up and down on the perimeter of the walls with a beautiful view but dirt present everywhere. Dangerous passages not reported, general negligence... what a shame

Our guide took us up the hill to Skopje Fortress Kale, There is not a great deal to see there, but one side of the fort's original walls remain. The guide gave an interesting history of the fort and how the Ottomans would hang people from its walls. Without a guide it is not worth visiting apart from the view over the city and Vudno Mountain and the Millennium Cross.

From the outside it looks like this is a well preserved monument and can be seen from many parts of downtown as it's up on the hill. The entrance is in back and it is free to enter but the site itself is disappointing. There are no exhibits which tell anything about the history or anything. It is nice to walk along the walls which gives a good view of the old city.

Much of this site is renewed but the walk along the wall gives great views of the city and fine photo ops. The entrance isn't signed. Get there through the old bazaar and then go left past the brewery and up through the park. There are no facilities.

Unfortunately the views inside the Skopje are not great, in general. Fortress is not an exception. The fortress itself looks quite poorly cared and maintained.. There is a lot of garbage inside, some strange combination of old parts of the fortress with newly built architecture parts. The views that you might see from the fortress - are normal panoramic views, but not something special. The final shot to the atmosphere is - very loud sound from the mosque near by at 14:00 every day. It feels really aggressive and disrespectful to other people around, in my opinion.. Okay, probably I don’t understand some inner context, as a foreigner. But as for other tourists, I had to mention that...

The huge fortress can’t be missed - or rather, the restored fortress walls. There is nothing inside apart from some foundations, rubble, weeds and rubbish. No signs, no interpretation, nothing to bring it to life. It is crazy that so much money is spent on statues for the town square and not on this fortress. A real pity.

The outer wall is well preserved, towers, and look-out posts are all in fantastic shape! The inner ancient ruins are just that- ruined and not identified; most probable, a Turkish bath and other ruins. The inside isn't anything to brag about, but it is a fortress and should be appreciated. There are amazing views from the walls: mountains, skyline, city, mosques, towers, Square Macedonia, etc.!
