Monkey Island Tour from Panama City

170 reviews
Monkey Island lies on Gatun Lake, along the Panama Canal, and is renowned for its large population of monkeys, along with other wildlife. On this tour, set sail on a scenic riverboat cruise around the lake and the Chagres River; look out for wildlife such as slothes, iguanas, and crocodiles; and spot four different types of monkey on the island—mantled howler, white-faced capuchin, Geoffroy’s tamarin, and lemurine owl monkeys.

I enjoyed this location, but did not realize it was Independence Square at the time. Regardless, really nice architecture. I would recommend passing by, if you don’t happen to do it by accident as part of seeing Cosco Viejo

The day we were here they were going to have a 5K race that either started or ended here. It is a pretty square where Panama signed the papers for its independence from Spain. It is right outside of the Museo del Canal.

The locals prefer to call it the Independence Square as this was the place where Panama signed its Declaration of Independence from the Spanish Empire on 28 November 1821. The square has a typical colonial layout, being bordered on all four sides by the most important buildings of the neighbourhood. One of them is the Metropolitan Cathedral, otherwise knows as the Mercedes Church.

We liked the old centre of Panama very much and this square belongs to the very centre. It reaches out to the cathedrale, has a old style hotel on the other corner and many nice views.
