Amazing to Watch an Engineering Marvel
This is a must do on a trip to Panama City. Plan to spend a few hours watching the huge vessels go through the lock. The announcer spoke in Spanish and English to ensure everyone had an excellent experience. Make sure to watch the IMAX movie on the history of the Panama Canal.

    Must-do in Panamá
This is a must-do if you are visiting Panamá City. At first, to me, it sounded a little boring, but wow! I loved every minute! We watched the movie (narrated by Morgan Freeman), and I learned so much about the history of the canal and the role the US played. I would recommend this to anyone...especially those who have an interest in history.

    Amazing Engineering
I heard the ships pass thru the locks early in the AM or after 2pm, so I left my hotel from downtown (Riu) and took an Uber at 2pm. I arrived and went to buy my tickets and saw the next IMax movie started in 5 minutes...great timing. The workers were friendly and helpful (I left my hat in the theater and they were waiting for me to come get it). As I walked out of the theater, there was a ship passing through the lock! As they say, "Timing is everything" and it couldn't have been better. After this I easily got an Uber to see Casco Viejo!

Enjoyable look at huge ships going up "steps"
This was an enjoyable, fascinating visit. The museum is still closed, so go to the canal museum in Casco Viejo for a detailed background, although the IMAX film gives a brief history. Check the ship transit schedule on the Visit Canal de Panamá website before you go. On the day I visited, ships were supposed to transit Miraflores only until 7:45 a.m., but when I got there at 8, the last ship was just approaching. Otherwise, the next transit would have been in the early afternoon. N.B.: once you leave the viewing platform, you can't go back, so check the IMAX film schedule and plan accordingly. Getting to Miraflores with public transport is easy. At Albrook bus station, take the C810 bus leaving from bahía D (bay D), for $0.25 (you need a Metrobus or Rapi-pass card). It loops between Albrook and the Miraflores Visitor Centre.

    Things to know
From Albrook station bus C810 drops passengers at ticket office( US$ 10,00 entrance fee ). It's not worth pay US$ 7,00 to watch the Imax movie, go straight to the platform view and do not miss any ship. No ships will pass between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm( time to change directions in the channels and then a good chance to see the movie ). In the morning ships come from the left side of platform view, afternoon they come from the right side. In my opnion it's better and more pleasant in the morning, in the afternoon the scorching sun is on our faces, bring a hat. From 2:30 to 5:00 pm I saw four ships passing the locks ( nov 2023 ).

    Great observation view
A great observation area to view the new locks and the obstructed view of the old ones. Interesting visitor center with a short film about the history. Very abbreviated but enough detail to get the idea. With the time

    Surreal Experience
Miraflores Visitor Center is a quick and affordable uber from the city. I tried to look up times of ships passing through but struck out so I chose to get there at 9a. I was lucky and caught the last ship passing through for the morning (apparently 10a is the last time) going East. The ships going on the other way pass through in the afternoon. I found the facilities very clean and accommodating- the viewing platforms are very easy to access and provide great views and there are announcements explaining the whole process.

    Great Panama Canal experience
As a tourist, the Panama Canal at Miraflores was high on our to do list and it did not disapoint. With advice from our hotel recptionist, we were told to just go on our own as it is pretty straightforward. Therefore, booking a tour isn't necessary. You can ask daily where you are staying for the ship schedules as some ships are smaller, you can look out for bigger ones to get full experience. She gave us the scheduled time ships were due to pass through and we calculated the lenght of time for getting there and lenght of the Imax documentary which is 45mins. Uber cost $16 Usd from our hotel & $17 per person for imax & ship viewing. Documentary is in 3D narrated by Morgan Freeman in English. We were extremely lucky that unexpectedly a ship that we did not know off was passing through as soon as the movie ended. About 45mins after , 2 huge container ships made their way through. Apart from the heat, and a lil issue as if you come late you cannot see to the front and people dont move, it is a great experience . If you are not really into ships it may not interest you but for us we really enjoyed it .

    A world wonder
My visit to the Miraflores Locks in Panama was truly unforgettable! The entire experience was a blend of stunning views and fascinating history. Watching the massive ship navigate through the locks was awe-inspiring, and the informative movie provided great insights into the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, making the visit even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this attraction to anyone visiting Panama; it's a must-see that beautifully showcases the country's rich maritime heritage!

Since the new locks opened, Miraflores has shrunk in tourist attraction value. The bulkiest barges are far away. Due to the current Covid restrictions, you are only allowed in in groups of 8 and have a maximum of 75minutes to spend there. The museum is well made but the way you are hounded through is ridiculous, given you have come with a certain interest and paid 10$ per person. As a man of the letter, I can well read the titles. If you read the vignettes you know more than the guides will tell you. On each floor they tell you more or less what you can see for yourself. Then they quackle on their walkie-talkie and rush you up. The highlight of the tour is the terrace. If you happen to be there at noon, the traffic turns and there might be no boat for another hour or two. At least that's what another guide says. We were not allowed to stay and wait for a ship due to the aforementioned Covid-rules. The boss, who was called after we explained our disappointment to a guide, was dismissive and told us we were "lucky" to have been allowed in at all. So, no history and no ship for 10$. Go to Pedro Miguel and you get ships, no history but a sunburn for free.

It is well worth the time and money to visit the museum and watch the IMAX movie showing the story of the Panama Canal's project. Everything is nicely organised and interesting. The place has washrooms, snaks and refreshments as well and at one of the viewing platform's levels, there is a restaurant where one can have a meal or a drink while watching the boats passing through the locks.

We stopped here and learned so much about the Canal. The introductory video is very well done and the museum is very informative. There’s a gift shop with products available over a wide price range. Restrooms were clean and the escalators and elevators made accessing all levels easy.

Most amazing is the observation platform. It is four floors above the locks giving you a view of the entire lock, opening and closing with the ships going through. You can see the rail cars and watch how tight the ship is inside the locks.

Cost was $20per adult. Visitor center/museum is 4 floors - you can start at the bottom and finish at the top where you can view the locks in action from a deck. The boats go through from Pacific to Atlantic in the morning and reverse direction in the afternoon. I think the morning before 11am is best. They announce when the next boat is coming over the PA system and as another reviewer said it’s best to get a spot on the viewing deck at least 30minutes before the ship is supposed to come through. People who didn’t were pushing and standing on tippy toes to try and see.

The guards/guides were bilingual and helpful. I thought the visitor center was educational but was disappointed in the locks. If you’ve seen locks in other places (Boston, Seattle) it’s the same thing here. I was hoping to see the big container ships go through but from this center you can only see average sized ships and canal tour ships go through. The really big cargo ships go through the lock expansion which is farther up/above and you can’t get to it from this center. Definitely bring binoculars. They have a little coffee/snack bar and also a nicer restaurant (with tables on a viewing deck) if you get hungry. Prepare to spend a few hours here as it takes an hour for the ships to move through the locks and another hour to go through the exhibit floors.

We spent a good portion of the day here watching the locks from a great view point right outside of the restaurant upstairs. They also have a museum which is 4 levels. Don't miss all the levels of the museum - follow the signs & escalators. It gives the full history of the Panama Canal and how it came about and the hard work put into this endeavor. There is also a small gift shop on the premises with a theater which unfortunately we didn't have the time to watch. Don't overlook this attraction!

A great way to see the operation of a set of the old locks on the Panama Canal. There are tiered ‘theatre-style’ seats to sit and observe the operation at close hand. There is also a gallery spread across a few floors, which chronicles to development and operation of the canal, together with a café and small gift shop. The entrance fee is $20 for a non-resident adult. Highly recommended for a stay of up to 2 hours.

To see the canal up close and working you need to go to Miraflores visitor center. Check the website the day of your visit to know the times the boats will be crossing.

Visitor center is open from 8am to 6pm, but the boats usually cross until 8-9am and again starting at 2-3pm.

The 3D Imax movie is totally worth to see, I suggest you watch it before going to the observation deck.
They will announce once the boats are coming, make sure to go up to the 4th floor and take your spot. It may seem it is not crowded, but once the boats are coming everybody goes out and it will be a mob.

We took an uber from Cinta Costera and it was $4. On the way back it was $11.50 since we left around 5:30pm and it was rush hour. There are taxis out there and you’d have to negotiate your rate

If you are visiting Miraflores Visitors Center by yourself, make your reservation beforehand at official website.
This is because they are restricting the number of people as a preventive measure of COVID. They are making around a group of around 10 people. They have the list of names who made the reservations and if you are have not reserved, they would ask you to wait for a while. I visited 8h00am on tuesday and fortunately I could see 1 ship passing by. It was awesome experience.

The Panama Canal has three ‘locks’ (Gates that raise or lower ships) - Miraflores, Gatun and Pedro Miguel. Miraflores is the set of gates closest to Panama City and the Pacific Ocean. Thus, it is the most popular (by far) of the three and has a dedicated visitors centre.

The simplest way to get here independently is just using Uber. Its so cheap in Panama City. We paid 5.17 USD to get there from downtown Panama City. We were easily able to get a uber back too (one was literally waiting in the car park).

Its 10USD entry fee to get in.

You MUST come here at around 0800 (for the morning session) OR 1500 (for the afternoon session). In the morning session boats from the Pacific Ocean are raised through the Miraflores locks. In the afternoon session boats coming from the Caribbean Sea are lowered from Miraflores lake into the pacific ocean. If you come outside of these times you wont see any boats transiting which is the highlight of the visit. The weekends are reportingly busier the weekdays.

We visited today and enjoyed watching a boat transit from the 2nd floor observation deck. It was a circus though. People everywhere clambering for photos and videos.

At the time of writing be aware that pretty much the entire visitors centre (3rd floor, 4th floor and 4th floor observation deck + the IMAX cinema that does the video about the Panama Canal) is closed for ongoing renovations. This means literally all your 10USD allows access to is the 2nd floor observation deck and a few information boards on the ground floor. Personally I thought it to be a bit cheeky to be charging full price despite only offering 1/4 of the visitors centre. Because of the reduced offerings the total duration of our visit was around an hour.

I have been taking friends to see the Panama canal for years now, they have changed the format, it is already very expensive to see the museum (foreigners tickets are $20 per person). They have now removed the cinema showing a nice short movie, and are charging you 50% more ($10) for the privilege to sit and watch a 45min long movie. what a joke! - treating non residents as cash cows!!!.
