Buying groceries in Arraijan, Panamá
May 2019 • Family
The Machetazo supermarket in Arraijan, Panama is large and has great variety from groceries, to flowers, haberdashery, bakery, butcher, fruit and vegetables and even alcohol. There are plenty of parking spaces. The staff are friendly, helpful and efficient. The boys that carry your bags to the car are very helpful.
I had a good impression of this supermarket. I highly recommend it.

Good Store Bad Maintenance
Feb 2018 • Solo
Actually this is a rating for the Machetazo in Caledonia, Panama City. It's a large department store with wide selection. It beats a North American Wal-mart for it's bargains and lunch dinner with local typical food. However the escalators aren't properly maintained. There's even a sign in Spanish saying "use at your own risk". This is true of all Machetazo stores. In short, the escalator suddenly stopped when we were on it and my mother fell forward and rolled. She got banged up and had to go to a hospital but nothing was broken. The manager explained that a child pressed the store button and the operation of escalator was 'normal' and added that older people should use the elevator. No it's not normal for escalators to stop like that. He also said this is the norm in Panama so watch out!

Incredible Store
Jan 2018 • Family
Can I be truly honest? My wife really needed a bathroom after having lunch at the seafood market. I took one look at this store and I said, "There's a bathroom in there."

We walked into the store and the air conditioning was really rocking. In fact, we could totally feel the arctic breeze from about 100 feet away. There's no door here and the AC is streaming into the world. I'm pretty sure that this is causing global warming. Hopefully Trump doesn't read this and tweet about it.

I looked at the store map and said, "We must go to floor 3 because there's a restaurant and you have to have a bathroom by a restaurant." We rode the escalator up the four floors. As I rode up, this place reminded me of an old school American store. I miss those. It was very sentimental as I remembered moments with my Mom at Sears and Woolworth. American sucks now. Thanks Amazon for making shopping and America crappy.

We reached the top floor and the bathrooms were great for this city. No one was standing by the door and asking us for money to pee plus there was running water and we actually had paper towel to dry our hands. What?

The restaurant is also a deal. For example, grilled chicken with rice was only $3.85. What? That's a deal. Now I know why this place was packed. They even had a steak and fries for $5.81. I wish we didn't eat at the seafood market because we would have eaten here.

The prices in store were incredible. I actually bought a beach umbrella made by Coleman that was marked down from $32 to $12. We are heading to an island tomorrow and last year on that island I rented an umbrella for $10. I'm now winning plus this umbrella is coming home with us. My girls ended up buying some beach flip flops for $1.99. Dear Amazon please don't buy this place.

We really loved finding this store and we will totally be back. I promise you we will be eating some grilled chicken here one day. This is where the locals come plus it's a fun shopping adventure.

Similar to Walmart

Machetazo is the Panamanian version of Walmart. It is multi floor with everything - a wide variety of groceries, toys, clothes, sporting goods, party items, household goods and decor. Well priced. Very clean.

Department Store, Supermercado & Cafeteria

I don't know why Trip Advisor classifies this as an "Attraction". And, therefore some options (below) don't fit the review style well. The ones I visited have escalators (not stairs) & probably elevators (for those in wheel chairs).

Of the several locations in Panama, I've been to 3. Perhaps the original (largest?) is on Via Espana, in Caledonia.

It has 7 or 8 floors - almost anything you need is available there. From groceries, clothing, shoes, office supplies, paints, home projects, electrical, housewares, appliances, books... I think you "get it"... :)

The location past 6 de mayo (I think it'd be called the Santa Ana neighborhood)is also large.

In 2013 or 2014 they opened one in Coronado (1+ hour west of Panama City), although not as large as the other 2 I visited, it's not small.

All have cafeterias, the 1st I described is very large & the line moves relatively fast. I've only eaten at the 1st & 3rd I described but the portions are generous & the prices are very economical.

It's cafeteria style where you have many choices (fewer at the Coronado location) including poultry, meats, pastas, salads, sandwiches, soup(s)...

I selected Family (young children) as my single-option but with teens, couples, friends or solo all seem appropriate - but not "Business", in my opinion.

Cheap and convenient
This is a very large store divided in departments. They have a large selection of clothes and other house stuff. The most attractive point is the price of things....really cheap!!!! Unfortunately, this is due to the low quality of the merchandize. But it is definitely a convenient place to find clothes, shoes, and pretty much anything you need in the hous , at a very affordable price!!!
