- JustintforfunBridgetown, Barbados171 contributionsBeautiful historical areaThis is the old town of Panama city, and is well worth a visit, with very well preserved, or restored old buildings. The area is full of restaurants, bars, and shops. It is well patrolled and safe to walk a boat. From certain points, you can see the ships lined up to enter the canal. They are lovely old church ruins. I have visited many old areas in south, and Central America and I would rate this excellent. The modern Panama City is full of high-rise buildings many of them quite ugly. It is surprisingly large and spread out.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2023

Many of the churches were beautifully maintained. There were also nativity scenes which were really huge. Must do in Panama CityVisited November 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 4, 2023

But also take some time to just stroll through the old city and enjoy the architecture and the beautiful restorations. We strolled along many empty streets after dinner just enjoying the scenery. Very different from the rest of Panama City.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 15, 2023

Watch the sidewalks....some steep drop downs and could be difficult for the elderly. Wish we had more time to spend here.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 5, 2024

Got an airbnb right in the heart of casco - literally 1 minute away from Casa casco. Planned to use this as a base to explore Panama city but with the exception of a beach tour to Tobago we just drink and dined at the great restaurants of Casco.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 24, 2024

Keep in mind this is not really REAL Panama, but it is amazing. I encourage you to explore west of this area, but only during the day.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 5, 2024
- 234ashSan Francisco, California59 contributionsWell preserved lovely old townCharming old town in Panama with views to the sea. Lots of shops, restaurants and bars provide something for everyone. The plazas and the churches are well kept and picturesque. We visited the area and wandered around a couple of times at different hours of the day and enjoyed the ambiance. Visit a roof top to look over the red roofs to the sea. Don't miss a wander down the street that is festooned with hundreds of colorful hats. The plaza near the French quarter has trees that are home to many songbirds. Quite lovely to sit and listen.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 15, 2024

Additionally, there are numerous excellent restaurants that cater to a variety of tastes. One of the highlights for my kids is indulging in shave ice cones, a delightful treat that they enjoy getting from the friendly vendors who line the streets.Visited February 2024Written February 24, 2024

Casco Viejo has several interesting sights. We enjoy and recommend visiting the following: The cathedral & San Jose church, all the plazas (Francia, Catedral, Herrera, and Bolivar), restaurants: American Trade Hotel and Tantalo and tour the Teatro Nacional. The Casco Viejo also has plenty of small souvenir shops. We also encourage rooftop dining to enjoy the views of the city. The city was clean, felt safe and the people were very friendly. Not recommend driving there, since there is very limited parking space.

A great and authentic area to visit which contrasts against the newer Panama City. Lots of great shops to explore (don't forgot to buy a Panama hat!), churches to investigate and plenty of refreshment stops! Don't miss getting a cone of flavoured shaved ice near Plaza Simon Bolivar, or taking in the view of distant skyscrapers. Thoroughly recommend the Central Hotel for accommodation and drinks, the Santa Rita restaurant for delicious and moderately priced steaks and Lazotea rooftop bar for a truly Latin American vibe with stunning night-time views.

We wanted to book a tour but they were all full, so we arrived by Uber at the Metropolitan Cathedral and walked a loop on our own. There's some signage and scattered "You are Here" maps but relatively short on info of these marked attractions at the entrance. (The churches do have a few paragraphs on special pieces inside e.g. gold altar at the San Jose Cathedral, and more in Spanish, and of course there's always Google Translate).
Did the 2/3 loop in 2 hours with very frequent stops, just in time for dinner.
Sidewalks are NARROW and often obstructed by construction, crowds in tour groups, local folks sitting there hanging out etc. Would be relatively hard (or at least tiring) to navigate if needing to use wheelchair or stroller... doable if you don't mind going into the car lane - but the cars might not give you right of way.

Casco viejo is the old Spanish section of Panama. It is located in an area isolated from the skyscrapers and businesses of modern panama. The place is a step back in time to the colonial Spanish which has its imprints everywhere. The most interesting sights are the old Spanish ruins of old churches that sprinkle the winding narrow streets. The area has some fantastic restaurants and clubs for nightlife and during the day, it offers colorful shops of crafts and clothing that will surely tempt the traveler. The central point of the area that faces the pacific is a beautiful place to walk and to enjoy a drink in one of the many small bars and restaurants.
Driving your own car to this area is not recommended since parking is almost impossible to find, and when you find it, someone will charge you for his services in looking after it. The narrow streets are almost all one way streets, which means there is no straight direct way to find any place. Also, one drawback to the site is that it borders a very dicey and dangerous series of blocks that are not meant for the lost or passing tourist.
The actual casco area is safe but it’s best you let a driver take you to the main sites.
Casco is a must see for any traveler to Panama.

Taxi drivers and tour books both said to avoid the areas around Casco Viejo, Panama City's "old town". As Panama City outgrew its Old Town, Casco became delapidated and somewhat shady. In recent years it's becoming gentrified, a destination in its own right. Beautiful churches, nice restaurants, plentiful monuments--and a view of the Panama City skyline that has to be seen to be believed!

Staying in the quarter for 5 days. Its fantastic to watch as the beautiful old colonial buildings are gradually being restored. A great place to wander around, it changes hugely from day to night. Don't come here if you like peace and quiet.... Its noisy during the day with traffic and construction and noisy during the evening with lots of bars, live DJs at the weekend. A very happening place and so glad I'm staying here and not downtown PC. It's maybe not for everyone but I love it

This is a must do in Panama. I really appreciated the old buildings on cobblestone streets with so many friendly people. The main attractions are easy to find with direction markers and maps located in key areas . We went without a guide and were happy to have time to spend examining details at our favourite spots. It was nice to really get up close and personal with historic monuments. It’s amazing how these buildings were build with various bricks, stone, mortar and iron work. I like that buildings under construction were also clearly secured with signage about the restoration project. There were fun markets to shop in, great unique restaurants, and transportation there was easy. We also stumbled across a beach that had lots of seaglass, which was nice! Also some great city views!

If you go to Panama, you must save time to visit Casco Viejo. It you like history, you will have lots of fun.
You will find lots of beautiful Catholic churches, which have survived fires and earthquakes. All the churches I visited had air conditioned, a detail that I really enjoyed. You can spend as much time as you like examining the interior of these temples, with their usual statues of religious figures, spectacular mosaics and marble ornaments, beautifully carved pews, and wonderfully peaceful atmospheres.
There are many sings written in Spanish and English, that are very easy to understand. They include interesting information and detailed maps. Among the many places that are worth visiting: Plaza BolĂvar, Plaza Mayor, Cathedral of Santa MarĂa La Antigua, Church of San Felipe Neri, Church of San Jose, Ruins of the Society of Jesus, Church of the Virgin of La Merced.

We were so fortunate when our hotel concierge advised us to visit the historic area of Panama City. That one visit compelled us to return three more times while there, as the area is so comfortable and easy to visit. The many church restorations are incredible and must be seen to be appreciated. And, the area offers much needed relief/escape from the newness and high energy of the central business area. We were there when all the public spaces were beautifully decorated for the holidays (highly recommend visiting). While exploring the area, in addition to the many churches also go into the restored hotels and experience the grandeur of their lobbies and have a refreshment at their bistro.

This is the old quarter of Panama City that has been gentrified in recent years. Some of the buildings have been restored. Others have been converted into quaint restaurants and bars. There are some beautiful plazas and churches to see as well. It’s a very popular place for both locals and tourists. Go there in the early evening and have a drink at a rooftop bar where you can watch the sunset. Then go visit a restaurant for dinner. Definitely visit this part of panama while you are in the city.

Hi, a good portion still opened on Sunday, but it was definitely later after Church Services.

Hi there, I will be visiting Panama in late February and will be staying in Casco Viejo for the first and last night of our trip. This will be the 3rd visit to Panama for my husband and I and we love staying in the old city before driving down to Azuero. This time my father will be joining us, and as he is a devout Catholic I'm hoping to plan our arrival date to allow for a Sunday mass before driving south. We have to get to Playa Morillo before dark, so logistically we have to leave Casco by 10 AM at the latest before heading to Albrook to pick up the rental car (which has been a 2-3 hour process in our prior experiences). Does anyone know of a church with Sunday Mass at 8 AM or earlier that we can go to? Thanks!

We stayed at the Magnolia Inn (and loved it! Know that there are older rooms and new rooms). The owner (Reggie?) was super helpful and I know can answer your question.

Hi, everyone! I'm planning a trip to Panama City and I'd love to visit Casco Viejo. I'm just wondering if it's dangerous to go there at night? Like 7-10 pm. Thanks!

I felt very safe there, as there are ALOT of police. Just stay on the main well lit streets and you'll be fine and have a wonderful time!

Hi! Going to Panama solo so wanted to get a guide to be safe and see more local sights. You mentioned a guide, where do you pick up one of those? And approx. what is the cost? Thankyou!

I used a self-guided walking app called GPSmyCity available on apple apps. Free guide works well and you can download the walk you want to take.
Part of the area is rehabbed, some areas not yet. Go during the day and you should be fine. Have fun. There’s a good taqueria for lunch on a side street

Anyone have insight on WiFi access. Was planning on taking an Uber into the city and was wondering if I would be able to get online to order one for a return trip?
I know I can take a regular cab but I've heard Uber prices are better.

Most pubs and restaurants have wi-fi connection, not only in the Casco, buying a local simcard is LOT cheaper than roaming.
Written January 14, 2019
Is the city English speaking and Spanish.. I suppose, but how bilingual are the shops and restaurants?
Written August 29, 2018
As with all things the answer is "it depends". Many hotels and guest houses have someone who speaks English. Larger restaurants that cater to the gringos will also usually have someone that speaks some English.
Most Panamanians know some English. The question is why don't you learn some Spanish too? Making the effort to learn the local customs and language goes a long way in improving the quality of your adventure.
Buen viaje
