Overview
In the late afternoon, your guide will pick you up at the hotel to take you to the Casco Antiguo, Panama City’s colonial quarter. At the Casco Antiguo you feel set back in time as you admire the lovely colonial houses, the narrow roads and the impressive churches. You will get a good idea about Panama’s history by walking through the main attractions of this quarter. Stroll this 337-year-old neighborhood under the warm golden glow of the fading sun and get to see the beautiful Plaza de Francia, Metropolitan Cathedral, between others. Casco Antiguo is a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as a place of non-stop ambience with history, culture, nightlife, and restaurants. Dinner will be served at a cozy local restaurant before going back to your Panama City hotel.

We found Panama Trails online and Lorena Amador was our travel agent. We are experienced, adventurous, and somewhat demanding travelers. We had not been to Panama and wanted help planning our trip. Lorena is a top notch travel agent. She is extremely responsive. She sent us great suggestions of where to go, hotels, when to be driven by Panama Trails and when rent a car, and where to take internal flights. Once we agreed, she booked everything and got us good deals. The hotels and routes were wonderful, many of them off the beaten path. A few times we needed a bit of help once in Panama, and Lorena responded quickly. Our trip was seamless, interesting, and fun, thanks to Lorena. We would highly recommend Panama Trails and Lorena.

PROS: Oliver the driver who picked us up from the airport-Outstanding All other drivers-Very Good CONS: *The "Giant Millenary Quercus Hike" is NOT "suitable for all passengers" and does NOT have "easy and accessible trails" as described in itinerary. The trails are all up hill and you must be in at least okay shape to climb (NOT FLAT trails) *No one picked us up from our boat ride to Isla Colon (as indicated they would on itinerary) so we walked to the hotel in Bocas del Toro *We went to the Jampan Tours Office at 9am as per the itinerary and they had no record of our tour for the Chocolate Farm and Botanical Garden. So they ended up sending us to another tour place nearby after several hours of wrangling and we were sent to Dolphin Bay instead and the Chocolate Farm/Red Frog Beach the following day with the original tour company (Had my spouse not raised his voice a little I'm not sure if either tour would have happened and we would have been out of luck on both days) *No one came to pick us up at 6am for transfer from Bocas Hotel to Bocas Airport as per the itinerary. Called the regular number then the emergency number. The man who answered said he had no record of it and we must have "changed our itinerary" which we did not. A taxi arrived so I hung up but it ended up not being a taxi intended for us. Finally, we obtained and paid for our own taxi to the airport since no one came to pick us up. Overall our stay in Panama was very enjoyable thanks to the wonderful people we met during our travels and separate tours we ended up arranging on our own. However we did experience a number of "glitches" in our dealings with Panama Trails which are inconvenient when you pay for someone to handle these things so you can just enjoy your vacation. Tip: Read ALL of the fine print in EVERY email they send you. Until we read the fine print, we almost missed that the passport must not expire for 6 months or more (per Panama regulations) from your departure date from Panama, and the luggage on Air Panama is about max 30 pounds for checked bags and max 8 lb for carry-ons. This created a huge last minute inconvenience regarding the passport that was thankfully caught in time. I think Panama Trails should have mentioned these two items a little more in their many correspondences (they did not miss asking for $$ payment on multiple emails) as these are both essential to having a successful trip and can be missed if you don't read over the fine print. ALSO-look up some information about the towns and hotels before you sign up. We were originally given a list of some not-so-good hotels for our itinerary and once mentioned, we were given a new list with better hotels. Panama City, Boquete, Bocas del Toro, these places are all very different. So research them as looking back we would have preferred staying longer in Boquete since Bocas del Toro was not really the right vibe for us.

We had several days of tours arranged with them to do various activities including Panama canal tour, boat cruise tour and Portebelo city tour. The drivers are guides and very knowledgeable on the history. We also used them to help transport us from hotel to hotel especially when we travelled 2 hrs to Valle de Anton for a couple of days. They were always on time and very courteous. Collected and dropped off at hotels from airport also. Great group!

My mom and I booked the Essence of Panama Tour this March. We started in Panama City, then flew to Boquete, and ended up in Bocas del Toro. Lorena at Panama Trails was fabulous and answered all of our questions quickly and competently--and we asked lots of questions! We were able to customize the tour and she made sure that everything went smoothly. We had fantastic drivers and guides throughout the trip and stayed in lovely hotels. We had the opportunity to go to Casco Antiguo and on a Partial Canal Transit during our stay in Panama City, on a cloud forest walk in Boquete, and some leisure time in Bocas. And all the transport and reservations were taken care of for us--nothing for us to worry about!
