The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador is in the first frame of the city, despite its recent construction (second half of the last century) was the site of unpleasant historical events such as the "massacre of the cathedral stands" this during the country's civil war.
Inside is the crypt of Óscar Arnulfo Romero and Galdámez religious figure of great attachment in the memory of the Salvadoran people and considered "saint" under the cover of the Catholic church.
The architecture is sober, on the facade stands out the sculpture of Jesus Christ the Divine Savior of the World and has two bell towers.
Enjoy The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Salvador because: LIFE...is a JOURNEY!

Though not as imposing as cathedrals in Other places, its a nice calm place to spend some time. This was first constructed in1842 which got demolished in an earthquake in 1873. It was built again by 1888. Once again it was damaged in 1951. The third time it was opened again in 1999 March. A tiled mural facade which was done then got stripped off in 2012.

This enormous cathedral is located directly off Plaza Barrios.
It’s free to enter and has two levels.
The lower level is the crypt and contains the remains of notable individuals and a tribute to Monsenor Romero, a priest who was brutally assassinated in the early days of the civil war (1980) for criticising the government. The second level is the church proper which features a massive dome, not too dissimilar to that of St Peters.
The architecture is impressive, even compared with cathedrals/churches in the rest of Central America.
A must visit while in downtown El Salvador.

In the center of San Salvador. The foundation dates back to 1842 but between earthquakes and reconstructions what we see dates back to the end of the 90s. Externally it is certainly not beautiful but certainly monumental. The interior is definitely worth it. Saint Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador murdered in 1980, rests in the crypt. It is located in an area that was very dangerous until a few years ago but is currently safe during the day and reasonably safe in the evening.

Can’t come to San Salvador and not pay your respects to Oscar Romero who is entombed below ground in a crypt. The cathedral itself is beautiful inside and out and-it’s a nice place to stop by and take a breather. The cathedral is also poly two blacks away from the Church of a Rosary, another beautiful church that everyone should visit while here.

Just another church out of the hundreds that I have seen in my life. But of course you have to see it because not much else to see in SS. It is a magnificent structure and the inside is very nice also. Close to all the other major sites in el centro so make sure you stop by.

This was definitely one of my favorite building in all of San Salvador. The architectural design is flawless, both inside and outside. I loved the memorial to Saint Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was brutally killed back in 1980, and became a hero of this small nation. Just beautiful at every corner, especially the painted dome!

Located in the main downtown area, this is a lovely little cathedral. Probably need all but 30 minutes here, max.

From the outside this is an interesting building and on the inside it is both an oasis of calm from the city centre hustle and bustle and a beautifully decorated altar and side chapels.
I am not religious but I found this both a beautiful and calming place.

Final resting place of Archbishop Romero, an important figure in El Salvador's history and not-so-distant civil war. Currently the entire plaza is under repairs so main entrance is blocked off. Humble but affecting interior.
