I was surprised when they asked us to wash our hands before entering the National Palace. There are chairs to use while waiting for the group to be organized. Entrance fee is $5 for foreigners, cheaper for locals.

The few rooms avaiable to visit are color-coded: Red Room, Yellow Room, Pink Room, etc. Our guide told us the history of the palace, areas occupied by the delegates, Courts, etc. There are beautiful chandeliers being used as lightings for these rooms. Woods, flooring tiles, metal works etc. were imported from Eiropean countries.

Outside are tall , big trees representing some Central countries with whom El Salvador has close relationships: Nocaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama.

It was great to be able to tour the National Palace! I was greeted when I arrived by friendly staff who let me know I would have to wait 15 mins for an English tour and was able to leave, walk around and come back. The tour was $5 and definitely worth it. Our tour guide was great, very easy to understand and very knowledgeable. There was a waiting area if needed and it was great to see a few of the rooms and learn about the National Palace and the history of El Salvador. The tour was pretty short - about 20 min - but was a great peak at a gorgeous building!

It is only open when the president is not there for a formal event and you do not need to book anything in advance - just show up and take a tour if available.

We stopped here with our bilingual tour guide. We then had to take a tour with one of the Palace’s guide who only spoke Spanish but was translated by our guide. It worked out well although it would have been a waste without our tour guide translating.

The tour was a little long but we liked it. I would recommend if you’re nearby and speak Spanish or have someone with you who can translate.

My guide took me to the city center, and to where one of the crazy story happened. From this beautiful building were thrown grenades onto the crowd below from the balconies. It was crazy times back in early 80s, and the history is quite something.

Nice building to take your proverbial photos but not much else imo. I didn’t bother to go in but sore that folks who are interested in this stuff will have a good time. Not a must see but as there is not much else in SS you might as well. All the churches and central market are located in this area.

OK, it's not the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires or the White House, and there are no ghosts of Evita or Jackie, but it is an interesting oasis in the middle of the city, with many interesting displays showing early 1900s furnishings and artifcacts as well as several displays telling the history of the outward expansion of the city. Yes, it was let go, and most of the rooms are bare or used as administrative offices, but for $3.00, it was a great investment for an hour while downtown anyway. The interior courtyard is beautiful.

It is expensive to maintain an historical building like this, and lack of expenditure was obvious. A visit here provides a lot of historical perspective. Other than the plaza and Cathedral there is not much else to see walking around this area.

Tip: my best advice is to check the availability/book of the night tours organized, in this area, by the governmental tourism agency/ police department. More info about it (Spanish) http://turismo.laprensagrafica.com/2011/06/de-noche-el-centro-es-historico/
To book http://www.politurelsalvador.com/otras-actividades/Home/actividades

Cons: this area looks very old, decrepit and dirty.

Pros: since it's not much to see in San Salvador I recommend it; we didn't have safety issues; locals are helpful and nice; interesting to learn more about El Salvador.

Wasn't open to entry but still worth visiting to see it from the outside and learn a little bit about the history associated with it.
