Having walked for about an hour while visiting attractions at the city center, I took a short break here. There are benches to sit down and enjoy the moment.

The tall monument has a statue of an angel standing on the globe, statue of a lion, plus some inscriptions. Note that this plaza is located across from the Church of the Rosary or Iglesia del Rosario.

We were with a guide. The square has a significant historical meaning. If you are there, check out the Rosario church! There are actually not so many tourists in San Salvador. The local people come to the square. It was Christmas time, so the square was nicely decorated and full of people.

The first independence movement of Salvador was in 1811 and to commemorate the hundredth year, in 1911, a monument was erected in Plaza Libertad. This is the only plaza still in the original location all these years from 1545. This was modified to provide marble benches, trees water fountains etc in 2018

I was happy to see the work of the government cleaning this treasure in San Salvador. It’s safe to go with tours

If you value your life, don't go there. Plagued with thieves, not very clean and smelly place. Go somewhere else.

The historic center of San Sal does not welcome one with open arms. This park is no exception. It is just not conducive to relaxing. This is due to a lack of shade, seating, and general maintenance. There are also a few people around who constantly need 5 cents for a bus. We loved our time in San Sal, as my other reviews state. San Salvador lacks a good central square to hang out in. There is no interesting or lively place to just sit. I think that is a shame.

I believe that the current state of the plaza reflects the morale of the area. It is in decay, dirty and a place that I would not go alone. Make sure that you don't go at night. It is worth your time to drive by and snap a picture, just lock up your valuables. Historically significant, but upsetting to see because its dirty. ;(

Tip: The government tourism agency and the police department organize some interesting night tours in this area. You should check the availability and book in advance. More info about it (in Spanish): http://turismo.laprensagrafica.com/2011/06/de-noche-el-centro-es-historico/

Cons: this area looks very decrepit and old.

Pros: we didn't experience safety issues (and we took buses); locals are helpful and nice; since San Salvador doesn't have much to see this is a must to see; Iglesia del Rosario/ Palace/ National Theather are close.

This is a slightly sketchy plaza located in the centre of downtown San Salvador. Frequented by prostitutes, panhandlers and homeless it can feel at times slightly sketchy. However, a police presence and recent gentrification have made it a lot more safe in recent years, if only during the day. Nevertheless it still maintains a gritty tone.

The biggest positive of plaza barrios is that the Iglesia El Rosario is located adjacent to it, and its only a stones throw away from the Cathedral Metropolitana and National Palace, as well as the central market. Because of this it makes for a nice additional stop in a larger tour of the downtown city area.

There is parking for $1 an hour next to Iglesia El Rosario however use it at your own risk as the ticket booth guy actually assaulted our tour guide after refusing to provide him a receipt for parking.

While on our walking tour, my guide took me there and explain to me that the statue basically is their version of the Statue of Liberty. The Plaza is beautiful, as I loved the big sign that says; I love San Salvador!
