Pre-Columbian artifacts, Mayan, on display. So are Colonial period exhibits. Not extensive but interesting and informative. I've been to some Mayan sites, but I have others I want to visit, including Copan. This museum is a must if you have any interest in Mesoamerican culture and history.

Discovered this museum and it was a nice treat to see the history of the region. The museum is laid out nicely with descriptions in Spanish and sometimes English with a small outdoor area. They have a gift shop but it was closed when we visited.

I recently visited the anthropology museum for the 3rd time. There is always something new to see, and it's hard to see everything in one visit. This time there was a special exhibit on migration throughout the history of El Salvador. Especially moving were the photos and stories of the migration of women. Many of the explanations for the exhibits are in Spanish and English. The museum is in an area with other sites to visit. Definitely a must for history buffs.

While this museum by western standards is unpretentious, it does protect and display treasures from the Mayan city states that would have looted or destroyed, including a burial chamber of a king with all of his tribute. If you do not get out to the actual ancient sites, this is not a substitute.

A very pleasant surprise! This museum is a real jewel in San Salvador. You have a very interesting collection of precolombian artifacts as well as colonial period. Most of the explanations are in spanish and english. Also very interesting the room dedicated to the development of agriculture. Very touching the part dedicated to the civil war. A special thanks to the free guide Adelina who proved to be very professional and prepared on the history of El Salvador. Besides, being a disabled person I really appreciated the barrier-free museum. The only negative point the absence of books about the museum. In any case thumbs up!

Great museum with a good explanation of the history of the region, in Spanish and English. Upstairs there are rooms devoted to crafts, religion, burial practices, etc. Very informative. Especially like the English explanations, so you don’t need a guide. Three dollar entry fee for foreigners. Good way to spend two to three hours.

I think this is one of the “must do’s” if you’re visiting San Salvador. The exhibits are well-done and have Spanish/English descriptions. There are some incredible artifacts on display and some pretty moving murals too. A great and easy way to learn about the place you’re traveling to.

This museum is a real gem - it gives a great introduction to all aspects of El Salvadorean history, starting with the Mayan period, moving on to cover the Spanish conquest & colonial experience, through to modern history since independence right up to the present day. It covers topics including religion, agriculture, the impact of mass emigration on Salvadorean society today and death rituals. Highly recommended.

Great museum. Well laid out. Very comprehensive regarding the history of the nation. But at the same time, not too many things to see them all. Particularly dramatic on the religious history.
