Wonderful experience. Rode an Uber up to the top. Make sure you arrange for your driver to wait since there is no cell service at the top of the volcano. Better yet invite him to hike with you as we did. It is a short mildly strenuous hike from the parking lot to the several overlooks at the top providing amazing views of San Salvador Volcano. We spent 30-40 minutes hiking. The drive up to Boqueron is also quite spectacular with great views of the city of San Salvador. There are also many restaurants and cafes along the way and at the top to grab a bite or a drink and shopping opportunities at the top with vendors selling souvenirs and locally made goods.

Visited El Boqueron early this month while vacationing in El Salvador with my family. This is a low-key high impact hike and perfect for amateurs. A great place to go to when you want to get out of the city and experience a quick change of air. You’ll need a few hours in your schedule to travel there and have enough time to enjoy the three visita points and eat the local fruit sold by the sweetest ladies. My family, and I drove our rental car there, and the drive is not for the faint of heart. Fortunately, my husband is from El Salvador and an excellent driver. We parked in a parking lot across from the park for a small fee and we met a sweet boy that became our tour guide and shared interesting information on our walk. We paid him $2 at our departure.

Hired a local guide to visit this park so had the added advantage of a historian and flora/fauna guide. Easy walking trails for the average traveler, you can take more time and actually walk all the way around the volcano. Beautiful views, lots a healthy plants and flowers. A bit of litter but mostly clean. Not a lot of places to sit and rest, small parking lot. Wonderful village at the entrance way with small shops/vendors of local wares. Would not recommend this spot for visitors with mobility challenges.

Close to an hour drive from the city, this involves a bit of trekking up a small hill so that you can view the crater from the top. This volcano is inactive and the last eruption was in 1917 destroying a large portion of the city. The park is open 8.00 to 5.00 and the entry fee in USD 1.00

At the end of the long and steep road is a small parking area for buses and cars. There is a small 2 room visitor center, with a relaxing courtyard, bathrooms but no drinking water unless you buy from vendors. The 15-30 minute hike (steep with LOTS of hand made stairs; $2/person) leads to the 2 main view points looking down into the inactive volcano. Some local street stalls are just outside the gate

Nestled just outside is the beautiful San Salvador volcano that is located in this park. There are hikes available but I went with a guide who drove me up to a short path that takes you to a view point (beware some stairs). From the top, looking into the caldera is absolutely stunning with a view of a smaller caldera inside!

El Boqueron is a relatively short drive from San Salvador and you can be taken to within a relatively short distance of the summit. It takes a normal person about ten minutes to walk the track to the top. There is a track that once used to lead a long way around the rim and down to the bottom of the crater but this is no longer maintained and specifically advised against using. Once at the summit, there are four viewing points along about a fifty metre section of the rim.

There is also a small information centre next to the car park and a wonderful view back across San Salvador and Lake Ilopango to the volcano of San Vicente. Slightly further down the hillside there are a couple of restaurants which have even clearer views than from the top.

Best to start early for this one, especially if it is a weekend as it will be super crowded. The hike takes maybe 1.5 hours to the top and is medium difficulty solely because of the ascent. Expect to spend an hour to descend and probably 45 minutes at the top viewing the crater.

I only once before stared down inside a volcano, which was on Easter Island. The hike up to the top is roughly 5 to 10 minutes, and gets steep in some spots. Once up there, there are multiple spots where you can marvel the views of inside the crater. This is a sweet spot to spend a few hours!

I came here on a weekday and started early. Weekends get crowded, I understand. Good weather greeted me. Cloudy but no rain. I had comfortable hiking shoes. I carried water with me. Not a difficult walk to the top. Nice crater view of the inactive volcano and surrounding countryside.
