Close to an hour drive from the city, this involves a bit of trekking up a small hill so that you can view the crater from the top. This volcano is inactive and the last eruption was in 1917 destroying a large portion of the city. The park is open 8.00 to 5.00 and the entry fee in USD 1.00

At the end of the long and steep road is a small parking area for buses and cars. There is a small 2 room visitor center, with a relaxing courtyard, bathrooms but no drinking water unless you buy from vendors. The 15-30 minute hike (steep with LOTS of hand made stairs; $2/person) leads to the 2 main view points looking down into the inactive volcano. Some local street stalls are just outside the gate

Wonderful experience. Rode an Uber up to the top. Make sure you arrange for your driver to wait since there is no cell service at the top of the volcano. Better yet invite him to hike with you as we did. It is a short mildly strenuous hike from the parking lot to the several overlooks at the top providing amazing views of San Salvador Volcano. We spent 30-40 minutes hiking. The drive up to Boqueron is also quite spectacular with great views of the city of San Salvador. There are also many restaurants and cafes along the way and at the top to grab a bite or a drink and shopping opportunities at the top with vendors selling souvenirs and locally made goods.

It takes about a 10 minute hike up a hill to the first viewing sight to see the crater. You then return on a different path with a few more viewing spots. The views are good and the park is well maintained.

There is also a viewing spot at the bottom of the park where you can see San Salvador. I was a little disappointed in this spot as several trees blocked parts of the view.

The drive to get to the park might be better than the park itself. The last mile or so is very tight with lots of restaurants and businesses on a very narrow road. There are several spots with great views on the road.

It takes some effort to get there but is worthwhile if you have access to a car.

Peaceful place high above San Salvador. Road gets very busy at weekends so good driving skills are essential. Can go up by local bus but doesn't go all the way to the top so it's about a mile walk to the national park. great views into the crate and over the city. locals charge $2 to park at side of road.

Nestled just outside is the beautiful San Salvador volcano that is located in this park. There are hikes available but I went with a guide who drove me up to a short path that takes you to a view point (beware some stairs). From the top, looking into the caldera is absolutely stunning with a view of a smaller caldera inside!

El Boqueron is a relatively short drive from San Salvador and you can be taken to within a relatively short distance of the summit. It takes a normal person about ten minutes to walk the track to the top. There is a track that once used to lead a long way around the rim and down to the bottom of the crater but this is no longer maintained and specifically advised against using. Once at the summit, there are four viewing points along about a fifty metre section of the rim.

There is also a small information centre next to the car park and a wonderful view back across San Salvador and Lake Ilopango to the volcano of San Vicente. Slightly further down the hillside there are a couple of restaurants which have even clearer views than from the top.

Exploring this location offers a pleasant experience. However, the journey up the volcano poses some challenges due to the narrow, winding roads and the swift movement of local cars and buses. Upon reaching the summit, parking becomes a potential hassle due to limited space, resulting in a congested area that complicates turning around or finding a spot. The absence of an official structured traffic control system and visitor guidance adds to the chaos. If you manage to secure parking, the next step involves a walk to the entrance, where admission is free, and the ascent to the summit begins.

You don’t need a guide for this. Just your own transportation to the top.

Beautiful green space and a magnificent volcano and crater with good restaurants. The Boquerón Slide is very manually operated and only less than 15 inner tubes used at a time and if the wait line is long, one could get stuck there for hours on end. As the people go down in their inner tubes, then about 15-20 minutes to haul the inner tubes back to the top of the slide and only 15 people go down and the the process starts again of hauling.

Not a good process. And it takes the fun out of it

Best to start early for this one, especially if it is a weekend as it will be super crowded. The hike takes maybe 1.5 hours to the top and is medium difficulty solely because of the ascent. Expect to spend an hour to descend and probably 45 minutes at the top viewing the crater.
