If you have time to kill in San Salvador, it is a pretty good hiking trip to see an active volcano nearby.

El Salvador is a land of volcanoes. El boqueron is the closest place you can go for a hike to take beautiful pictures and to stop to eat some pupusas with coffee

Paid entrance, clean place, little museum. Nice views of vulcano San Salvador. Beautiful flowers, 4 observation points. The vulcano is 1.5km wide and almost 600m deep.

For what you'd pay for a cab you might as well do a tour that will pay close you up at your hotel and explain what you're seeing on the way. I highly recommend Nahuat tours
