Our family took this tour in September whilst in Kiev on holiday. We expected exactly what the tour advertised; seeing a genuine Cossack Village in action and learn about their history whilst in a totally different country to ours.
Before we even arrived, we discovered they had over charged us (and blamed Viator for the mistake) but when refunding us, didnt take into account the exchange rate fluctuations so we were left significantly out of pocket. They then just ignored our emails and discussions with them requesting a way of sorting this out (we thought there would be options, ie something free on the day in return or a discount on another tour) before and since the tour.
On the tour, the guide was lovely but she was very focused on telling us how terrible their lives had been, how bad the Russians had been, and then spent a significant amount of time preaching to us about the insides of their (beautiful) church, telling our 12yo son that he needed to make choices so he didnt go to hell instead of the 'eternal glory of heaven'. She had no idea of our religious beliefs and it was extreme for this type of generic tour. This was only one of a handful of times where she went into detailed explanations of religious items around the village and warned us about 'making choices' and how we were only welcome if 'our hearts were open and filled with kindness for their beliefs'.
We then wondered around the village where there only a handful of other tourists strolling through. There were no working houses, no other staff (apart from one inside a house where they tried to sell gift shop items and one other in the bar/restaurant). There was no music, no dancing, no interaction, no 'life'.
The half day tour starts at 3pm and goes three hours. Hardly a half day tour. There was no military garrison, no market place and no military chancellery. Just a dozen houses, a church, a windmill and a pretty lake. Even the man who looked after the horses wasn't there (according to the guide, he didnt bother coming in today because there weren't enough people and it wasted his time) so we couldn't even see a blacksmith in action!
We basically spent money to wonder around a park in the middle of Kiev and be lectured about religion. I'm pretty sure there are better ways of spending your money than this. Our one and only letdown in an amazing city.
