- MaxPinucciFlorence, Italy84 contributionsAn amazing ethnographic museumI visited the museum with friends from Kiev. They hired an English speaking guide. The museum is set on undulating terrain, pleasant for long walks (bikes can be hired and there are also restaurants and shops). Buildings have been reconstructed that cover, over time and space, the ethnographic history of Ukraine: churches, villages, windmills and even schools. It takes a long time to be truly appreciated. Unfortunately I visited it on a beautiful but cold late winter day. I hope to visit it again soon.Visited March 2019Written January 5, 2020
- bratakus7 contributionsTaste of Old UkraineThis is a little village out in the country frozen in time. Everything is interesting there. Go on a sunny day. You need to drive there, so arrange a comfortable car/taxi to take you there & bring you back before you go. Tasty traditional food is for sale in cool old style vendors & just seeing the food on display is worth the visit. It's a huge place, so be careful you don't walk too far from the entrance! Rent bikes or whatever to see the whole place. At the entrance there are English speaking guides, which are not expensive. I spent about 4 hours there. Good fresh air, sunshine, excellent food & beer, the smell of grilled meat... fantastic. The old style houses are cool too. You can go in & look around. It's not some boring museum like in Europe where you just look at it from a distance. You can walk right in rooms & check it out properly. Excellent site!Visited August 2019Written January 28, 2020
- YuriOdesa, Ukraine2 contributionsGreat place! If you interested in getting to know better the country you are visiting, its history and traditions, then this is the place for you. We had a fantastic tour with a group of my British colleagues and please give your self a favor ordering a guided tour. A very dedicated guide Alexandra was exceptionally good at telling everything about the Ukrainian way of life back in the days. Even though it was my 3d tour to this place, every time I am learning something new. You will have a tour with her through one of the 6 areas and then will have plenty of time to walk around on your own, have a picnic or getting a good lunch at one of many places at the spot. The food is very good!Visited September 2021Traveled with friendsWritten September 13, 2021

The day we went was really spectacular. So great to be hanging out in an open air museum on such a great day. There's a lot of walking. The directions/map are not very helpful. Highly recommend renting a golf cart to see all the homes (we did not). The tour guide we got was mediocre. We got one or two unique nuggets about life in Ukraine back in the day, but not much actual detail. That was a little disappointing.

I love open-air museums and this one is great! It’s kind of cheap, however, it’s difficult to get here by public transport. You should notice that it’s closed on Wednesdays! They offered and English-speaking tour guide, which was awesome, it’s difficult to get to know something without knowledge of Ukrainian language in Kiev… I realized it during my research which tours I can book. I booked a tour from Kyiv Military Tours and it was also very exciting. Their English skills were beyond praise…

We went to this beautiful place when Kyiv was still in lockdown. We enjoyed walking while admiring the beauty of old wooden houses and windmills. This is a great place to breathe fresh air and learn about the old Ukrainian villages.

Originally a village south of Kiev now Pyrohiv/Pirogovo is an unique open-air museum of traditional Ukrainian architecture and way of life. It's a must see attraction for tourists and everyone who is willing to learn more about the life of the Ukrainian rural population in the past. This museum was found in 1969 year and is with area of 370 acres, it is exhibiting around 300 buildings (houses, churches, wind-mills, etc.) from different Ukrainian regions. These original buildings from Middle Ages till early XX century (I have been told that the oldest exhibit is a house from 1587, the oldest church is from 1742 year!) were disassembled by parts in different regions of the country, transported to this museum and rebuilt on the spot. There is also a huge collection of folk costumes, furniture, utensils, musical instruments, etc. so you really could see and somehow feel how life looked in these old times. There are a lot of musicians and artisans dressed in traditional costumes who are playing old instruments and selling recordings of their music and hand-made products/souvenirs.
There are two or three restaurants inside the museum where you can try original Ukrainian cuisine (nothing fancy thoughas interior though) as well as small shops selling gifts and souvenirs where you can buy something to remind you of Ukraine, Kiev and Pirogovo.
There is a bus going there, you can catch a taxi or go there by car (it's 30 min away from the city centre) - there is a free parking next to the entrance of this unique museum.

We just went to Pirogovo folk village on June 30 and the guidebooks aren't updated on the new transport info. They've extended the metro line 4 stops past Lybidska so it's worthwhile to keep going all the way to the end....don't get off at Lybidska, keep going all the way to Vystavkovy Tsentr, the last stop, and from there grab the 172 mini-bus to Pirogovo (keep your bearings and take the 172 in the same direction you were travelling on the metro). We took the 156 mini-bus from Lybidska. It was a long 30 minutes on the 156 from Lybidska and the driver dumped us off to walk a kilometer to Pirogovo (though we saw a later 156 pull up to the entrance). The 172 goes all the way to the entrance of Pirogovo and we got this on the way back.
Lot's of unshaded walking between villages. On a hot summer day take hats, sunscreen, water and try to get there as early as possible. Believe it's only open Thursday to Sunday.
If it's hot it's worthwhile to pay the 50 grivnas per person (25 grivnas for kids) for the cart tour. You'll hit the farther out villages and it stops in three of the villages for 10 or 15 minutes each, and then when it finishes you can take your time walking and exploring the two or three villages closer to the entrance. We wanted to rent bikes but there were none. Try to bone up on information about the different villages from guidebooks or on the internet....there's no brochure there in English. If a guide is there who speaks English, I'd recommend hiring the guide just for two or three of the villages closest to the entrance, then walk back up to the entrance area to do the cart tour (this tour has recorded Ukrainian or Russian narration).
If you have kids the 172 and the 156 marshuktras pass the go-kart track and you could hit this on the same day. Dolphinarium is next to the go cart track (though we didn't do either of these activities).

This is a right place to admire Ukrainian traditional houses.
Take Metro Line 2 to Vystavkovyi tsentr Station and transfer to bus 507. The bus will take you directly to the entrance.
You will see rental bicycles are available at the entrance, but I believe walking around is a better choice. It will take you around two hours.

This is a large sprawling site that may not be a practical place to visit if walking is difficult. Having said that, the many preserved buildings and farm implements are fascinating. Seeing how people lived in the country just 50 years ago is a very interesting comparison with today's standards. However education was an important priority because every village had a school. The thatched roofs on many buildings looked warm and waterproof. There were stalls selling reasonably priced souvenirs, many hand made and good value. Buses to a Metro station ran at 30 minute intervals but the best way of traveling to the site is by taxi or car.

We had an amazing time here. We were lucky with the weather too. The museum is huge and beautiful. If u get hungry you can eat some fantastic traditional food as well.
My advice is don't book a tour because if you go there and by a ticket it cost 50uah/person so it is really cheap. Yes u have to translate for your own and read on Wiki but the price difference is huge.
The only problem is that there are not enough toilets.

This is how the peasants lived in the past, but I was told that this also represents living in the Ukraine countryside today. Also where local couples take the wedding photos.

Take the Blue Line to the end (as of May 2012) at Vystavkobyi Tsenter and take an 80 uah cab to the front gate. (We saw bus 172 at both the Metro stop and the front gate but cannot confirm that it's the one to take, so ask.) English language maps were available from one of the offices just behind the ticket area: cost: 95 uah. Their one English-speaking guide was 'away'.
The area is vast, but we spent only noon-5 pm and wandered most of the paths through ancient windmills and sod houses all the way to Carpathian steep-roofed homes, and into the 1960's and 1970's homes with TV's. There is a central amphitheater with simple plays depicting the sweep of Ukrainian history and music. Lots of food, including wonderful pork shish kebabs and grilled corn on the cob, topped off with pancakes (crepes) if you are willing to stand in a long line.
Interspersed are shops in the huts and homes selling gorgeous needlework and painted eggs, but bring cash - no plastic accepted. I was sorely tempted by a hand embroidered blouse for 2000 uah (=$250!!!) so lucky for me that I did not have that much cash on me!
Most of the paths are paved but wear comfortable shoes. We are mid-60's and active and did just fine. Kids have loads of space to run around.
If you've no transportation back in time or into the rural areas of modern Ukraine, this excursion will give you a bit of the flavor and was thoroughly enjoyable.

By trolley bus No. 11 from the Expocenter metro station (M2 blue line) to the last stop.
By route bus No. 496 from Lukyanivska metro station (M3 green line) to the last stop (the bus also passes by the Kyiv Zhulyany airport).
How much does the food cost?

Obviously there's some variation here but you should be able to have a fairly filling meal for around 100-150UAH. I went a slow day with few vendors and there was still shashlik, borsch, glintwein, pastries, coffee, and tea, just to name a few offerings.
As for the on-site restaurant, I can't speak to their prices but I would be surprised if they were outside the 75-150UAH per person range.
