I had done these ‘free’ walking tours in other cities, and they always proved great introductions. So, I decided to do one in Belgrade too. I reached the meeting point (literally, just outside my hotel) at the appointed hour, and found Milan waiting with yellow umbrella. Between Corona and off-season, I turned out to be his only guest—so enjoyed a private tour. For most of us who lived through the second half of the 20th century, and the strife that befell the Balkan states (the former Yugoslavia), this was an amazing opportunity to learn more about the ‘players’ of this troubled era. Lots of facts, names, dates, events—not always politically-correct—which was fine by me. Did any of us who grew up thinking that America was the humane power know that they dropped bombs containing depleted uranium here, and in other parts of the world? Tito’s Communism, Nazi conquest, and the ethnic strife we remember arising from the dissolution of Yugoslavia into independent republics were all discussed. We delved into the Serbian Orthodox Church, and visited St. Mark’s and St. Sava Temple. So this was not ‘fluff’—probably not for kids, or those seeking a recreational experience—it was history on a very high level. Highly-recommended.

Great tour led by Milan around Downtown of Belgrade was a perfect choice of a day. Make possible to understood a lot of things about city, his citizen and history. It was not boring, even instead it was well balanced between jikes and historical facts. And as result inspired to deep more into history of this wonderful city and country. Thanks, Milan 🙏
