A friend of my Belgrade-born wife recommended this museum over drinks one night, and as she is a rather knowledgeable person (and a professor at Belgrade's university), I followed suit and went with my niece the next day. A mere 200 dinars gives access to a top floor of contemporary art, a temporary exhibit on the main floor, and an absolutely stunning display of Serbia's more recent artistic expressions in the basement. Each floor was staffed by guides with obvious educations in art and who spoke perfect English. I am a person with many questions, and they were happy to explain anything and freely exchange about any impression I had. This always enriches an exhibit, having people on hand who are educated enough to deepen one's experience.

The top floor features some really interesting works of art from the last fifty years or more. Some are really outstanding, and others are a little more trying. This depends on the viewer and their perceptions, and I will confess some of them left me feeling indifferent. I do not wish this comment to take away from the many works that did impress me, and there were plenty enough of those, so that if this were all there was to the exhibit, it would have been more than worth the time and the price of admission.

On the day of my visit, the ground floor featured a temporary exhibit of the life-work of Milija Nešić, a daring and fearless artist whose work surprised and delighted me. His art features a plethora of iconoclastic commentary and brutal honesty, all occurring in the context of Tito's Yugoslavia. This served not only to highlight the risks he was taking being this kind of artist in a communist country, but also exposes the tolerance Yugoslavia was able to show to artistic expression at a time when no other communist country would dare do the same. If you think about that, for instance if you imagine his work occurring in any other communist country, you would not be surprised to see his career preempted by a lifelong jail term. Just read about the troubles of Ai Weiwei in China for proof. What's more, as good art should be, Nešić's work struck me as completely relevant for our times.
I felt it resonating with everything I know about life from my forty-nine years in Canada.

This temporary exhibit lasts until the 30th of September, 2018, and is even better than the top floor collection which thus added value to the, I feel the need to repeat, dirt cheap price of admission.

But I unknowingly saved the best for last, having begun at the top and then descended to the ground floor, and thus proceeded to the basement. What awaited my eyes was an absolutely astounding collection of more recent works of Serbian art. I cannot overstate how moved I was by almost every sculpture and tableau in this collection. Either the person who collected them is an incredibly knowledgeable person with impeccable taste, or the state of Serbian art is simply this good. I tend to think the latter, having been impressed with much Serbian art in my past visits ( I come to this country every year due to marriage), but this is irrelevant to the fact that no one with the least openness to art should avoid it. Even those simply looking to escape the often crazy summer heat of Belgrade on Knez Mihailova street - the museum is just a few blocks away from the entrance to Kalemegdan park - should venture inside. My niece, who lives in Belgrade, was similarly impressed, and as a result we wound up having frequent and wonderfully deep discussions about many of the wonders confronting us. A few hours passed easily, and the subsequent passing hours left me wanting to return.

A small caveat is that some of the art, and in particular the works of Milija Nešić, feature explicit sexual content, and so this might need explanation to, or the avoidance of, younger children. But let that comment not detract from the brilliance of the man and his oeuvre, as well as the unbelievable collection in the basement.

Don't miss it.

From the outside we expected a small gallery. Indeed, the student price of 200 RSD (~2.5 dollars US) for the both of us initially made us expect a small environment. However, we quickly saw that there were many more art pieces than we expected. We spent almost 2 hours in this gallery, and even skipped one floor. The artwork was very good and we enjoyed many contemporary artists from the second half of the 20th century. It's mostly Serbian art but there are regional and international pieces as well.

Truly a wonderful museum/gallery to spend a few hours in, excellent relaxing atmosphere and some wonderful contemporary works of art by Serbian artists.....truly worth more than the symbolic entrance fee. Other countries/cities in the world charge a small fortune to view such pieces. Very highly recommended.

You should visit this privately owned museum. The ticket price is simbolic, cc 2e, and you will have the chance to see really good selection of 20th century paintings and few sculptures. I would change the position of some paintings, but if you ignore the fact that some of the best pices of Serbian painters are in the corridor accros the tolites with no space in front of tham...it will be ok. The building itself is a piece of art.

The Zepter Museum , is a contempary art gallery in Belgrade's main pedestrian street , Knez Mihailova Street , no. 42 . Even if you do not like art particularly the building alone is well worth a visit , being a converted bank . The gallery is private with a wondrful collection of modern Serbian art , and the staff are absolutely excellent , being very keen to discuss the various paintings , and their background . It only costs 200 dinars (about £1-40 ) , and is free to people over 63 years of age . It is easy to spend several hours looking at this unique collection , and we would recommend the gallery to anyone visiting Belgrade . I was really surprised that it had not featured on Tripadvisor previously .

This is a gallery of contemporary Serbian art, a private collection. There are paintings of major Serbian painters from the half of the last century till present on display, probably few of them among the most representative. The entrance is free for all visitors on Sundays and every day for young children, students and elderly people. It is closed on Mondays. If you are interested in this sort of collection - it could be interesting. I suggest that you check it out beforehand on the site of the Gallery.

The art is nice but not exeptionell. The presentation is very strange. Hanging pictures next to the toilet? Hanging art above a radiator? Hanging pics under the staircase? Adding art on the staircases? Never seen such an unprofessional exhibition way for a such nice interior. I recommend the museum for contemporary art and the newly reopened museum "narodni museum"....
