Tourism can be different, would you agree? There are museum, natural, beach, gastronomic, pilgrimage, mountain, water, healing, cultural etc. But I “discovered” another type of travel for myself - market-market travel. Sinful - I love markets... Fruit and vegetable, fish and meat, seasoning and confectionery - those same places that have existed from time immemorial, where people sold and bought various goodies.
Therefore, when planning to visit the next country-city-village, I try to include the local bazaar, market, tregu, merkatua, piac, markaður, trh in my walking routes. Barcelona's "Mercat de la Boqueria", Prague's "Trhy na Tyláku", Bergen's "Fisketorg", Split's "Stari Pazar", Munich's "Viktualienmarkt", Odessa's "Privoz" - how many interesting, smart, polyphonic, salivating things I encountered on my travels marches!!!
And here is Belgrade!!! And now - its oldest farmers market “Zeleni venac”!!!
It is almost impossible to confuse this place with any other - its current characteristic building with a red and white architectural decor, built in 1926, is recognizable from afar. Although there are more than thirty farmers' markets in Belgrade, it is “Zeleni venac” that is considered the most famous, being a place that is not even a tourist place, but an aboriginal one.
It’s clear that we, loitering travel pilgrims, attract us with its authenticity, the aura of a real bazaar, which in the full sense of the word has stepped into the age of iPhones, bitcoins, freelancing, social networks from somewhere from the times of the Belgrade pashalyk.
Here you can easily buy at a fairly reasonable price, in addition to the standard set of vegetables, fruits and meat, original local Serbian nyams, such as ajvar, cheeses (pule, kachkaval, manur, vurda), meat delicacies (pršut, kulen, čvarci), sweets ( ratluk, strudls, pitas, gomboche). The market got its name – “Zeleni Venac” – from the area in which it is located (but that, friends, is a different story).
A visit to the Belgrade market awakened in my memory the lines written by Irina Samarina-Labyrinth:
“I’ll go and go to the market for happiness,
And then to the supermarket, for luck...
And so what if this is not a product...
I’ll ask for more love - for change...”
Do not miss!!!

Zeleni Venac Market is a great market, where you can only find locals selling and buying very tasty food. I really enjoyed walking here for half an hour. This is a nice off the beaten track sight in the city center of Belgrade.

the Zeleni Venac market which is located about 400m from hotel Moskva and the beginning of Knez Mihailova is very charming. There are more than 100 stalls, about 60% of them are fruits, vegetables and other food while about 40% contain clothing, shoes household etc.Fruit and vegetable are very cheap about EUR 0.30 per kg with excellent quality.clothing is very cheap too. there are also 2 food stores and a pharmacy. the market is very tidy, with good smells and a rain roof for protection, The best way to locate the market is by taking a taxi from your hotel in old Belgrade, only 250 dinars, about EUR 2.0. for those interested, the market is very close to the Jewish synagogue, Sukat Shalom.Tke market is also open on Sundays till 8:00 pm .

Opposite the bus station is a park, go through it (not at night please !) and at the end is Kamenicka street. Climb the stairs, but not too fast please, because fun already starts here: Kamenicka street is some kind of a fleamarket where can can buy everything from nuts and bolts to fur of foxes. Up is the Zeleni Venac market: mainly a green market, but also household goods, cheap clothes and homemade rakia can be bought. There is a small supermarket and there are public toilets. Take your time.
Cross the street after you have visited the green market, go to the right and walk through the underpass, take the stairs on your right, walk 75 meters and go up again...you are very close to the pedestrian zone and can start another walk....

Being lovers of all things markets we were quite excited to visit Zeleni Venac (Green Wreath), it did not disappoint. This is the most central of Belgrade’s farmers’ markets and is the oldest green market within the city, celebrating its 170th year in operation in 2017, (WOW). With its location next to the main bus station, makes it very popular with people/locals/visitors ending and starting there journeys here. During our visit there was a real vibe about the place, the vendors spruiking there wares and the many locals racing around snapping up a bargain, the quality of the fruit and vege was sublime - made everything on the shelves of the supermarkets look a bit more than half dead, what we especially liked was in most cases there is a set price on all produce, what you see is what you get, (almost), you could still get the wrong change or get short weighted however, with a displayed price, at least you begin with a fighting chance. (It is worth saying this has not happened to us at this market) however, it all just adds to the trill of the hunt, and the value is worth it, for instance of the value to be found - bananas were 120 dinara/kilo, apples 50, strawberries 200 and pomegranates were 130 per kilo for an example.
We stopped for a snack/lunch at a bakery tucked in the corner, for a serbian hotdog (frankfurt/saveloy, wrapped in puffish pastry)and a wedge of cornbread, both very tasty and excellent value, paying 150 dinara for the 2 items.
This market has become our regular haunt, (during our one month visit to belgrade) for fresh fruit & veges and bread products, amazing value and quality

We stayed in an apartment in Belgrade and did our own cooking. fresh ingredients daily, it doesn't get much better than that. No chemicals a plus.

If you want to feel a town spirit you should visit local green market. I do it every time I visit new city. This one is located in the city centre, so if you are nearby you have to visit (I think) the oldest green market in Belgrade. There, you can find groceries, fruits and other cheep and quality food. Also, clothes and cosmetics and some small kitchen and house staff. It is recently renovated and roofed so you can walk in the rain and enjoy local food and fruits:)
Across are main bus stations-downside international, and upside local.
