Nice Statue
Aug 2020 • Friends
The statue is really pretty and sits right at the entrance of the fortress. The design is nice, and the groomed trees around it gives it even more charm.

... for the French heroes.
Oct 2019
Without turning the review into a history lesson, still have to mention a few words.
WWI started in Belgrade - it is know how and why - but fewer people know that in 1915 during the war French soldiers died defending Belgrade. ..
In order to commemorate the fallen soldiers in 1930 the monument was erected.
If you are interested in history this is a place for you to stop , at least for a few pics.

Very nice monument dedicated to France
Nov 2019 • Solo
Monument of Gratitude to France is located just outside Kalemegdan Fortress, in Belgrade, the main city in Serbia. It is a bronze sculpture of a woman and it is dedicated to the France troops, which played a major role to the liberation of Serbia in the 1st World War. Very interesting and nice.

The sacrifice of French soldiers - remembered
Sep 2019
We took a Viator Segway tour of Belgrade and our tour guide stopped at this monument which we would never have found on our own. Many French soldiers were killed in 1915 defending Belgrade and the city never forgot. After the war, Serbia became part of Yugoslavia, but Belgrade stayed as the capital city and the citizens wanted to memorialize the French sacrifice. It’s definitely worth a photo.

Nice monument
Aug 2019
Adored by manicured trees, this is a fitting tribute to the efforts of France to Serbia during the first WW. It is understated but the connotation is of a solitary effort to support the country. Located inside the fortress.

Very Impressive Monument

You will come across this monument as you approach the Belgrade Fortress and was erected as a mark of gratitude for France's help to Serbia in WW1. It's definitely worth stopping to admire it.

Monument of Gratitude to France visit while is still there
Nov 2018 • Friends
It was officially opened on November 11, 1930, in the presence of King Alexander Karadjordjevic and other prominent people. The monument was erected on the initiative of the Society of Friendship of France and the Society of Former French School Students at the site of the monument to Karadjordje, which was destroyed in the First World War.The work of the sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. The bronze figure of a woman with a sword at the top of the monument symbolizes France. On the left-footed footing there is the composition "Warriors", which symbolizes French and Serbian soldiers in the First World War. On the right side there is the composition of the female figure with children, the Sorbone's parading - educational assistance to the Serbian youth during and after the First World War. On the back of the postament there is the inscription "We love France as she loved us 1914-1918". The green area around the monument was built on the grounds of French parks. Nowadays after serbian historics find more about france after becoming more aware of the roles of the French in the war, an initiative was made to remove the monument. So far, due to political events, the monument has been completely covered with black fabric several times, as a message that Serbs think of the current French attitude towards Serbia
