I was on the mountain Avala numerous times and always have seen something new. This summer in my walkings on the paths of this sole mountain around Belgrade, I descended from the top level of Avala and on the one of the trails leading downwards, found this modest but evocative monument dedicated to members of the Soviet military delegation who were killed in an airplane crash here on the Avala in 1964.The delegation was flying to Belgrade to attend the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade on October 20,1944. Marshal Biryuzov and general Zhdanov were killed among others.
Nowadays two streets in Belgrade bear theirs names.

A high ranking soviet military delegation was flying to Belgrade to attend an anniversary of Belgrade liberation. During foggy conditions in October 1964 the plane crashed clash to the top of Mount Avala. The Monument was sculptured by Jovan Kratohvil (in the shape of wings).

In many Balkan countries there are monuments to thank the Soviet army for driving out the Nazis. In Serbia there was no need for these, as the partisans united by Tito did the job all by themselves. An example for all Europeans: rely on your own force. So this monument at Avala caught my attention. It is to commemorate Soviet military who died in an air crash in the 1960s, a time when Tito tried to preserve independence from both blocks: Nato and Warsaw Pact, a balancing act that is still of great importance as most European countries seek a third way between superpowers USA and Russia.
