Pretty grim!

Just as a prison should be...... very grim. It is from the 1800’s and the prison guard lived upstairs. He did have a fireplace and probably a coal stove. The walls were three feet thick. It sits right by the park which hosts a gazebo and basketball courts for kids. Buckner who was in charge of this prison was a Revolutionary War hero. At one time there was a courthouse here too but it burned down and was never rebuilt.

Augusta's Historic Jail
Sep 2018
It just so happened that the jail happened to be open on the evening we were visiting Augusta, KY for the weekend. It's hard to believe that this old jail, with it's crude looking interior, was in use until 1976!

Oldest Jail in Ky
Jul 2018 • Family
Oldest Jail in Ky, built in 1811. Very cool to get to walk into and actually sit in the cells where prisoners had to stay years ago! A lot of history in that building, if those walls could talk!

I like to see roadside attractions and this Is one you have to come see from the car. This is one that is very interesting since I like to see old buildings and this is an old Jail.

Haunted Jail!
Aug 2015 • Family
OVer the years, our Ghost group has spent the evening here investigating the Jail many times, and we are always getting evidence, we get Evp's, Ghost Box responses, footsteps upstairs, shadows, and a variety of activity, it seems something seems to remain there, it's a very small place, but if in Augusta a cool little place to visit.
I believe John Dliinger spent a night here when he was younger.

Interesting Building and Stories
Aug 2014 • Friends
The 1811 Jail in Augusta, Kentucky is thought to be the oldest jail in Kentucky with its original foundation. It is an interesting find and is tucked away at the city park known as Appelman Park. Call ahead or stop by the Tourism Office on Main Street and they will gladly open it for you and give you a tour. It has been investigated several times for paranormal activity and definitely gives you a look into what it would have been like to be a prisoner back in the day.
