No visit to Romania would be complete without ticking off Transylvania, where ancient castles are set against backdrops of dramatic rolling hills. See the best of the region without having to worry about car hire or navigation on a day trip from Bucharest, which offers a great introduction to local history for first-time visitors.

I ate a meal in one of the restaurants located near this cute church. I didn't go inside as the church appeared to be closed, but it looked quite good from the outside. Worth a look if you're already in the vicinity.

Another lovely church, tucked in just beyond the Hilton Hotel. The paintings within the splendid iconostasis have beautiful, elaborately carved and gilded frames. Not quite the same atmosphere as the Old Court Church which remains my favourite of those we visited, but definitely worth seeing.

One of the largest churches we visited in Bucharest. Nicely decorated. Definitely worth a quick visit.

We were staying at the Radisson Blu, so this church was very near our hotel. On most days it was closed, but at the weekend I managed to go in and have a look. Lovely and serene inside with many golden icons. Worth a visit.

Biserica Alba (the White Church) is situated on Victoriei Street, and it was named so, from the outer color of its walls. The church was built in 18th century, and its holy patron is Saint Nicholas. It's painted inner walls, the altar, and the silence, it's very appropriate to religious meditation.
