I have attended cooking schools in several countries over the last 5 years and I rate Societe Gourmet in Bucharest as the most excellent in many ways. The cooking taught at Societe Gourmet is at fine restaurant standards, but presented in a way that can be applied to home cooking. It was like going to the best restaurant in Bucharest and having the chef invite you into the kitchen to show you all his secrets! Chef Daniel is a well-schooled European chef with a fantastic wealth of knowledge about food chemistry; as he demonstrated each step and technique and choice of ingredient, he explained why it was happening, this made the difference between simple showing and educating. I especially appreciated his modern, lighter, healthier touch to the classic European dishes. For each dish, Chef Daniel demonstrated professional plating techniques to make the healthy food look posh and elegant. His partner Raluca provided the freshest highest quality ingredients for each dish from Bucharest's markets. The whole experience occurred in an open loft-style Bucharest restaurant with a hip vibe. The highlight was when we sat down as a group to dine on what we cooked, and Chef Daniel offered detailed instruction in the perfect wine pairings for each dish, placing a special focus on Romanian wines. PS, Chef Daniel is multilingual and he conducts his classes in English.

Super weekend experience. Menu well planned. High end restaurant standard. Group integrated well. Great sense of team success. Very proud of the finished meal. Daniel introduced us to some Romanian wines we had not yet tried. Standard of accommodation excellent. Interesting to visit a local lady in the village and experience the hospitality of the Saxons. Plenty of down time to relax and explore the UNESCO heritage fortified church in the village. Our guests from Kiev were well impressed. Highly recommend.

As we were in Bucharest for our study week, we wanted not just to eat "ready" menus but also to cooking something by ourselves. Therefore we did a private cooking class with Société Gourmet! As we wanted to taste the different culinary specialities of Bucharest, the chef Daniel Wendorf customized a special menu for our group of 9 students. The location was just amazing as we could cook outside! This was a really unique experience. Also the atmosphere with Daniel and Raluca was just great! We spend a really nice day with them and had a lot of fun! I just can recommend to do such a cooking class with Société Gourmet!

Suited for groups for private parties and cooking classes, you are invited into a warm and welcoming home away from the bustle of the city. Soft lighting and comfort add to the exquisite dishes that you will experience here. bBefore our group were of 17 were aided and instructed in making a variety of Romanian dishes, we were welcomed with a starter platter of: home-made sourdough bread, cured meats, local cheese, and ‘ zacusca’ (vegetable spread).
We then were divided into groups and prepared the following: Starter: Ciorbă de Perișoare ( traditional sour soup with meatballs and vegetables)
Main: Bul z with Tokană ( traditional shephard's dish: polenta balls stuffed with a very special cow's milk cheese named “burduf” and pork stew.
Dessert: Papanași (traditional sweetcheese donuts, moist on the inside crispy on the outside, served with sourcream and blueberry jam).
This experience and meal had to be the highlight of our trip to Romania!
It is an experience you should not miss.

If you take cooking classes when you travel, you know that classes aimed at tourists are usually designed to introduce regional cuisine to foreigners, not really to challenge someone who can already cook. Not so with Societe Gourmet! These classes--held in a gorgeous, chic setting--will challenge you! Sausages from scratch, pasta from scratch, truffle infused wine sauce for fruit desserts--truly sophisticated and tremendously fun. Also, the day I was there, I believe I was the only "foreigner," so it was a wonderful way to meet local people with common interests. Daniel, the chef, is as skilled and creative as he is funny and nice, and I learned a lot from him. Be sure to check their calendar and see if they have a truffle hunt planned--that was off the hook hilarious fun! Chasing an Italian truffle hunting dog through the forest, and then bringing the bounty back to the kitchen to turn it into a delicious meal was an experience I'll never forget! Plus, have you ever smelled a truffle just pulled from the earth? I mean....come on....I wanted to rub it all over my face.
Do yourself a favor, and go visit Societe Gourmet.

Daniel and Raluca make a great team, and everything is organised perfectly, the menu is incredible and the selection of cooking classes is varied. What's best about it I think is the fresh approach, but complimented by Daniel's experience and knowledge. There's no question you can ask that he does not have an answer for, and believe me, I always have a lot of questions! I also really liked that for every course you get a recommended Romanian wine: not only they support local producers, but you also get to learn a little bit more about wine and the different types you can get locally for a decent price.

Thank you so much for your review! It's great to hear that the message about our market's fabulous ingredients reaches through. I always tell the peasants how much both locals and visitors appreciate the taste of their work. Too bad they don't use Tripadvisor to see your message :) Thanks again and all the best, Raluca
