A monument to hubris and bad taste

Just like visiting Versailles and trying to rebuild it on the third floor of an apartment building with that guy who “took a design course” and now adds golden foil and fake mink fur to toilet bowls made in Turkey.
A true expression of egregious lack of culture, immense greed and hilarious unawareness of the concept of irony. A perfect mirroring of the other kitsch giant just a couple hundred meters away.

big and ugly

Opulence symbol of the wealthiest and quite offen linked to child abusing acts people, also called clerics or priests. Whenever I see something like this I cannot help my self thinking of the atrocities they did during the 1st half of the 1st century. They are among the biggest mass murderers in human history , and sadly still big influencers for the Romanian population

Useless, kitschy waste of public funds. As if Bucharest was in need of another gargantuan ugly building with all the worst superlatives.

Cathedral (Romanian: Catedrala Mântuirii Neamului) refers to an Orthodox cathedral in Bucharest that is meant to become the patriarchal cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Church. It is the tallest and largest Orthodox church in the world by volume. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox church in the world by area, according to the full church criterion, and the second in the world including the partial church criterion.Or the third in the world by area including the Oriental Orthodox church criterion. It is located in central Bucharest on Spirea's Hill (Arsenal Square), facing the same courtyard as the Palace of the Parliament the heaviest building in the world, the cathedral having the tenth part of its weight. The standard ground level of the People's Salvation Cathedral above the Black Sea is 86.2 meters. At 135 meters, the cathedral holds a dominant position in Bucharest's cityscape and is visible from all approaches to the city.

Not finished yet
Sep 2019
It is not better than the times of Ceaucescu. Today the Roumian people have to pay an extre tax for the new cathedral, which should have been finished already in 2018. it is a pretty bad joke in the 21. century to built something which doesn't have any relevance.

The People's Salvation Cathedral an Eastern Orthodox Church
This is still under construction and will become the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
It is the tallest and largest Orthodox Church in the world by volume and the 3rd in the world by area.

Still under construction

We went to visit it today and was surprised to see it's still under construction. From afar it looks pretty big, might be bigger even then the Pallce of the Parliament. Will probably be one of the biggest attractions when it will be completed but who knows when that it will be. Worth a stop if you are in the area.

Controversial but impressive

One of the largest cathedrals today, pretty far from being finished anytime soon, I'm not a religious person nor I have anything against churches, it's true that the money could have been used for something else instead, renovating old buildings instead, but, given that every big European city owns a big cathedral in the heart of it, bucharest makes no exceptions, after all Romania is a pretty religious country so it might not be a money waste for them. One thing I'd change would be the rooftops, that gold looks kitchy.

Under construction, it looks impressive but controversial
Jul 2018 • Friends
Romanian politicians and leaders seem to love grand projects, the latest being the Romanian People's Salvation Cathedral (due to be finished in November 2018, but looking nowhere like it) built on land near that other huge monument, the Palace of the Parliament.

When complete, the patriarchal cathedral of the Romanian Orthodox Church will be the largest Orthodox church in the world, able to hold around 6000 people and will be the part of a larger complex which at least will bring this wasted land into use.

It is not without controversy, not least its cost, which is half-funded by the state, and its priority when so much else is in need of funding. Construction started in 2010 and it is due to be blessed in November this year, but at July 2018, it does not look anywhere near complete. It does look as it if will be an impressive building when it is finished and opened and it is interesting to see how modern building techniques are being incorporated into a traditional design.
