Every 15th of February hundreds of people gather here to commemorate the Afghan War.
This is a small, clean and picturescue park in the Riscani neighborhood of Chisinau. People of any age, who live nearby like to stay here for long every day. Kids prefer the playground, teens roller-skate, and grown-ups usually play chess or domino.
There is also a set of big wooden street chess here.
Plenty of shops and cafes nearby.

Dedicated to the troops who lost their lives during the War in Afghanistan 1979 - 1989.
Inspiring memorial and park generally busy with people and located in a built up area.

Beautiful memorial featuring the "black tulip" which was the name of the helicopter which brought back the bodies of the war dead. Beautifully done. Worth a visit. I knew the Russians had fought in Afghanistan in 1979 to 1989 but not the Moldovans. Very popular square

A memorial to the Soviet soldiers from Moldavia who lost their lives in the Afghanistan War, a war that lasted 9 1/2 years. This war is also referred to as the Soviet Union's Vietnam War or the Silent Bear. The similarities between the Soviet Afghan War and America's Vietnam War are almost identical. Both Soviet Union (9 1/2 years) and the USA (8 years) lost wars that they believed they would win in only a few months; but were severely defeated. Both the Soviet Union and USA retreated and evacuated Afghanistan and Vietnam. Both wars were political. This is considered one of the leading causes of the fall of the Soviet Union.

The monument is a long walk (1 hour) from the centre of Chişinău but in a modern, vibrant suburb with lots of cafes, bars and restaurants. The monument commemorates Chişinău’s fallen youth during the Afghan war between 1979 and 1989 - mostly boys of my vintage who never saw their 21st birthdays. Smallish, simple but poignant memorial.

I really liked this little park, it was busy with people enjoying a hot Sunday afternoon.
It is in a really nice district in Chisinau, lot’s of shops and restaurants, and feels like a completely different city to the main street in Chisinau, definately worth a visit to the park and area.

Typical war monument so not really that interesting. It dates from the time that Moldova was still part of the Soviet union which invaded Afghanistan in the 80's.

Park Afghanistan Memorial is a park dedicated to the lives lost during the Afghanistan War; which, lasted 9 1/2 years (1979-1989). The park has multiple fountains and always has people there during the warmer seasons. The park has a pleasant atmosphere with many cafes and shopping in the area.

I absolutely love this park and visit it every day when living in Chisinau. It's a memorial park, but is packed with people every day. There are even small concerts held there- if you're lucky, you can catch one.
