- fabito2015Brasilia, DF672 contributionsvibrant street day and nightTkalčićeva Street is the most vibrant in the city. In the early 20th century, until the Second World War, it was the famous street of the brothel. Today, Tkalčićeva is famous for its bars, fun, energy and vibration during the day and night Unfortunately I only got to meet her during the day.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 22, 2024
- Inspector_MoreGreater Manchester, United Kingdom178 contributionsTkalciceva experienceProbably THE most buzzing street in Zagreb during the summer. The downside of that is difficulty finding an outside table and a surly service in some restaurants. Avoid those and head for the ones which try harder - typically towards the northern end.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 27, 2024

This is a long street through the upper part of Zagreb. It's very touristy, with lots of shops and restaurants, and throngs of people. The street is car-free, so you can walk along it without fear of traffic. It makes for fun people watching; you can sit down at a cafe or in a small park and rest and watch everyone walk by. We spent an hour or so here getting a dessert to eat, wandering, and people watching.

Located in the northern part of the city this long street seems to be tourist central.
Good to experience day or night, but for me the night time had much better atmosphere and visually better with Street lit up.
Lots of restaurants , Cafes and Bars to enjoy, it seems every tourist in Zagreb eats on this street in the evening.

This was an excellent street with lots of restaurants and things for tourists to see.
The gas lanterns are still lit every night by hand which is such a nice part of the city tradition. There was a street which was referred to as Bloody bridge due to the feuding between the two cities over the old watermills in the area. There is a small park on the street, cafes and places to eat. It was good to people watch here as well.
It was a busy place in the day and busier at night when people came out for dinner. It was a lively street.

Tkalciceva street is one of the liveliest and consequently also touristy streets in Zagreb. This street, which today is lined with numerous clubs and restaurants of various types, was created at the end of the 19th century on the path of a small stream and for many decades was the center of the city's red light district. It is certainly a lively route but I found it not very characteristic.

It is what it is... an old street with numerous bars, cafes and restaurants. Perhaps it's more impressive in the height of the summer but it was a bit of a let down to be honest. People had raved about it in reviews but when we went there wasn't much going on at all. Be aware, if a parking bay nearby (or anywhere in the city to be honest) has a series of numbers written along it it means it's reserved and you need a permit to park... even if the number is hardly visible or unreadable. They're pretty quick to dish out the tickets around there!

We wandered down this street twice. It has lots of lovely old buildings, many of which are sadly hidden at ground floor level by awnings. In December, plenty of these places were enclosed and heated and we found one that was a nice stop for a mulled wine, a beer and some people watching. Very much a street that is worth visiting. No traffic either.

This street was right by our apartment just across the road.
Really busy day and night full of bars cafe's and restaurants. Old buildings line both sides of the street feels very safe and just a good atmosphere impressed

I love how the Tkalciceva gives good sight in social life of Zagreb during summer.
Everything is full of people eating, drinking, hanging out.
The bars and restorans are lovely and you can find big range of cousines.
What i enjoyed the most were Street players who played traditional and pop music.
Definetly must see in Zagreb.

It is called Tkalca, it was considered a red light street, our guide pointed out to us where in ancient times there was a renowned brothel, now it is a riot of bars and restaurants, cafes and shops. In the past a stream divided the two ancient settlements Gradec and Kaptol (now there is no watercourse, there is an asphalt road), another detail is that once the houses had opaque glass and red lanterns precisely to merchandise activity. An ancient sundial and the statue of M.Zagorka, a Zagreb feminist writer and journalist who has always fought for women's rights, are still visible.

Hello, I would like to know about excess of tourists and very high temperatures in the first week of July. Is that a very crowded and warm period, requiring lots of patience? Would you recommend Croatia with kids (5 year old boy)? Thank you very much.
Written June 5, 2016
It depends where in Croatia you intend going. Most tourists traditionally head for either The Dalmatian or Istrian coast for the Summer. Both have beautiful scenery around them and wonderful clear sea and lots of islands to visit. Will it be hot in July? Undoubtedly as this is a Mediterranean climate. Would I recommend it for a 5 year old? Well I guess that depends on what the child likes. However, Croatia is more a country of beauty and tradition rather than just a holiday resort with lots of children's entertainment. Some areas will be very busy, some more sedate and less so. You won't find many sandy beaches though. Personally I like Zagreb, Baranja, Slavonia and Lika as much as the coastal regions. Plenty of waterfall, national parks and beautiful scenery.
If can provide more info on your families interests then I may be able to give you a better steer.
