You can drive with your car to the top of the mountain. The so called end stop is actually TV tower. You can take a little walk but we didnt find good places to enjoy the view, so the attraction was driving there not the view.

Stupendous cable car construction, base facilities and comfort. This is a must see ride if you visit Zagreb. Easily accessible by tram from anywhere in Zagreb. Wonderful views. At the top are the ski runs.

We had such a great day out. Take the cable car up from Bliznec. The ride is brilliant. Great views from the top. Lots of easy hiking trials from the top. A little cafe selling snacks and drinks. Great fun!

Just outside of downtown Zagreb is beautiful Sljeme mountain with its dense forests, hiking trails and fresh air. An easy escape to the great outdoors without really leaving the city. There's even skiing in the winter!

We took the trams from Zagreb centre and then the cable cars to the top. Very quiet considering the scale of the cable car but maybe it is busier during ski season. Worth a trip out and there is a cafe at the top

Hiked from the Potocani bus stop to Medvedgrad castle. Trail head was not marked. Once you get on the trail it is well marked. It is an uphill hike so a good fitness level will get you to the castle in about 30 minutes.

I saw that this was rated the number one attraction in Zagreb and it certainly didn't let me down. The toughest thing to find was how to get there, so hopefully this helps:
1. Take Tram 8 or 14 from the central square (JJelicica).
2. Take Tram 15 to the last stop (Dolie)
3. Walk down the stairs and across the street into the childrens park.
4. Walk through the tunnel, carry on up the paved path and up the stairs.
5. At the top of the stairs turn left on the paved lane.
6. After about 5 minutes you will come to a right turn in the road at an old abandoned house, u-turn up onto the path beside the house, don't take the road.
7. The path is well marked with 3 symbols...3 arrows (more common down below), white dots on the rocks and trees; and a red circle with a white centre...all three will get you there.
8. Once at the top of the hill continue up the road to the right of the hotel, up the stairs and across the base of the ski hill. Turn left and there will be a path that takes you across the ski hill, past the old gondola and up more stairs to where the TV Tower is located; here you will also find restaurants and some great views.
It was about 2 hours up (maybe a bit more), less coming down.

My girlfriend and I used directions from a previous post to get to the start point of the walk, which we found really useful. I thought I´d re-post the directions, with a few updates (previous review was from Aug 2012).
So credit for the below mostly belongs to `Scottie310´, my additions are in brackets from our walk in Aug 2015 – we really enjoyed it!
1. Take Tram 8 or 14 north to the last stop - Mihaljevac
2. Swap and take Tram 15 to the last stop - Dolje
3. Walk down the stairs and across the street into the childrens park.
4. Walk through the tunnel, carry on up the paved path and up one flight of steps.
5. At the top of the steps turn left on the paved lane.
6. After about 5 minutes you will come to a right turn in the road at an old abandoned house, u-turn up onto the path beside the house, don't take the road.
7. The path to the top is well marked with 3 symbols...a red circle with a white centre (most prominent), a white + symbol on a yellow background (useful higher up) and 3 arrows (not as visible when we walked)...all three will get you there.
8. Once at the top of the hill continue up the road to the right of the hotel, up the stairs and across the base of the ski hill. Turn left and there will be a path that takes you across the ski hill, past the old gondola and up more stairs to where the TV Tower is located; here you will also find restaurants and some great views.
(It took us 2.5 hours to get to the top beside the TV Tower, one restaurant was open which served standard bar/grill food. There were no stalls or places to buy supplies on the way up, so bring water and snacks for the accent)

I lived in Zagreb for a year and took many hikes up Sljeme. There is a trail club that has a map of the maintained trails on the mountain. I bought mine in a office supply store just south of Jelacica Square, but it may not be there anymore. I was there in 1996.
I went back in 2006 and took my wife for a hike on Sjeme. We took the tramway to the top and hiked down. The mountain was as quiet and beautiful as ever. We had a terrific hike down through the tall trees amongst the ferns. If you like to hike or just like a pleasant walk in the woods, I highly recommend some time on Sljeme.

For those who want to enrich a brief visit to Zagreb by a unique experience of diving into a pure nature but still have restaurants and bars at reach, Sljeme is the place to go. Make sure you schedule your visit on a day when weather is nice and without rain.
I did not find a precise route description on the Trip Advisor how to get there by car, so I had to do a bit of research. As result, here is a description of the car route that I hope will help those traveling to Sljeme by car, as I did. It is worth mentioning that there is a number of sign boards which show directions to Sljeme.
Let's assume you would like to start your journey from the city centre.
If you visit the Zagreb, in the city centre you will certainly vatidit its main square - Trg Bana Jelacica. If we take it as a reference, you can start your journey to Sljeme from the intersection of Vlaska and Ribnjak streets. That point is situated approx 300m east from the Ban Jelacic square - just off the Ribnjak park, which is located behind the famous Zagreb cathedral.
Follow the Ribnjak street, then continue a bit longer by the Medvescak street - a long alley with cars parked beneath trees which separate the lanes. From the Medvescak street follow the Ksaverska road until you cross the tram. This is a location called the Mihaljevac where the tram line 14 ends.
From Mihaljevac take the Gracanska road for couple kilometers until the sharp turn to left, which will take you into the Bliznec road. In front of that intersection there is a road sign directing the csrs to Sljeme.
Once you turn into the Bliznec, your ascent towards Sljeme will commence. Follow the road for circa 12 km until the Sljeme summit - the place just below the Television tower which you can see
from Zagreb are surrounding area.
Upon arrival on Sljeme, you will find there a number of well marked hiking trails but also a number of restaurants which serve s variety of delicius local food for very affordable prices.
The return route to Zagreb will take you do a different roaf which starts from the roundabout near the bus stop, where road sign directing you to Zagreb is located. An attractive road will take you through forrest until you reach the place called Sestinski Dol.
A couple of kilometers before Sestinski Dol you will encounter the place called Kraljicin Zdenac. It is a great oportunity to park your car short after it - in front of an intersection. From there you can walk up the hill until you reach the Mediaeval fortress called Medvedgrad from 13th century. For 15 HRK (a bit more than 2 EUR ) you can enter the fortress and enjoy the stunning views of Zagreb and its western surrounding.
Please note that there is a public transport which can take you to Sljeme and back, in case you don't have a car. This is explained in more details elsewhere on the Trip Advisor.
Enjoy your retreat to the nature within a reach!

Hi, I'm planning on visiting Medvednica from Zagreb; what is the best way to get there?
Written January 2, 2017
Hi! If you're going by the public transportation, go with trams number 8 or 14, in direction Mihaljevac. You can access the tram 14 on the main square, and the tram 8 one station away from the main square (Draskoviceva street). Once you reach Mihaljevac (last stop), you'll take tram number 15 there (direction Dolje) and go to its last stop. And from there, you can start hiking.

Hi, planning to go Zagreb this December, loving the sound of exploring this mountain. The restaurants mentioned, are they open all year round or just seasonal? Thanks
Written July 5, 2016
Yes it's a good time to go. Might be cold so go prepared. Yes these are opened all round
