Zagreb Cathedral is the largest sacred building in Croatia and has stood in this location for eight entire centuries. Damaged several times by fires and earthquakes, it gained its neo-Gothic appearance at the turn of the 20th century. Note the Renaissance walls next to the cathedral built in the 16th century to ward off the Turkish invasion. Under renovation on the date visited, September 2023.

Zagreb Cathedral, located in the Kaptol district of the Croatian capital, is a Catholic temple dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus of Hungary. It is not only the tallest building in Croatia but also the most monumental sacred building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps. The cathedral is typically Gothic, as is its sacristy, which is of great architectural value. The foundation stone was laid in 1093. The cathedral was affected in 1880 by an earthquake that forced a major reconstruction of the building, especially the facade designed by the prestigious Austrian architect, Hermann Bollé, next to the two 105-meter-high bell towers that have become a visible reference from most of the city. The interior and one of its two towers was damaged in a new earthquake that took place on March 22, 2020.

This is the cathedral of Zagreb and its spires can be seen from many places throughout the city. It is unfortunately closed for renovations after the 2020 earthquake, so we weren't able to go inside, and the towers were covered with scaffolding. However, it is still a beautiful building, and we made sure to stop by so we could admire the exterior portions that were visible.

I visited this cathedral while sightseeing in Croatia. It is a Catholic church in the capital Zagreb, and I was looking forward to seeing the two beautiful spires towering over the old town, but unfortunately, it was damaged in the magnitude 5.5 earthquake that occurred in Zagreb in March 2020 and is currently under restoration. The collapsed stone of the spire in front of the facade was still vivid, and both towers were under scaffolding, so I was unable to see them. The cathedral was completed in the early 13th century, and has since been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly, with the current neo-Gothic exterior being restored after the great earthquake of 1880. What a fate for it to be hit by another earthquake. I would like to see the beautiful appearance after the restoration.
By the way, there was a brick wall and watchtower that looked out of place like a castle on the outer perimeter of the cathedral, but this is apparently the remains of a fortress built to counter the invasion of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century.

Zagreb Cathedral: a work of art awaiting rebirth

Zagreb Cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings in the Croatian capital. Built in Gothic and Neo-Gothic styles, the cathedral is the symbol of the Christian faith and the history of the city.

Unfortunately, the cathedral is currently closed for restoration work following damage caused by the 2020 earthquake. Work is ongoing and the cathedral is expected to reopen to the public in 2024.

Despite the closure, the cathedral is still a work of art to be admired. The exterior of the cathedral is imposing and majestic, with its twin towers 108 meters high. The interior of the cathedral is rich in works of art, including frescoes, statues and mosaics.

Visiting the cathedral is an unmissable experience for anyone visiting Zagreb. Even though it is currently closed, it is worth stopping to look at it from the outside and admire its beauty.

Pros:

The exterior of the cathedral is imposing and majestic.
The interior of the cathedral is rich in works of art.
The cathedral is a symbol of the Christian faith and the history of the city.
Against:

The cathedral is currently closed for works.

As others have mentioned, the church is temporarily closed while repairs are ongoing from the damage done by the 2020 earthquake. Much of the building is covered in scaffolding and tarpaulin. The two towers are pretty much the only distinctive parts of the church that clearly marks it out as a cathedral. The building is a landmark of the city and still worth a stop even if the interiors are closed.

It was interesting to walk around and admire the elaborate scaffolding propped against the building, but access to the inside was closed. Disappointing, but still a beautiful building. Evidently, they are repairing due to earthquakes? That’s what we were told.

Temporary closed due to construction.

This is a must see while your in Zagreb. Still very beautiful from the outside.

This cathedral's twin spires – seemingly permanently under repair – soar over the city.

Formerly known as St Stephen’s, the cathedral has an original Gothic structure that's been transformed many times over, but the sacristy still contains a cycle of frescos dating from the 13th century.

An earthquake in 1880 badly damaged the building, and reconstruction in a neo-Gothic style began around the turn of the 20th century.

Nice Cathedral but under construction at the time we were there. So we could only see parts of it and the rest of it was under construction and could not go inside of it. That was not good but understanding why and hopefully in the future it will reopen again.

Zagreb's cathedral is quite an imposing and impressive building with everything built towards the skies.

Gothic inspired, impressive stained glass works, a cavernous, dark feel, it is richly decorated and quick 45 minutes visit should not be missed by visitors of the city. One of the tallest features of the city, entrance is free and you can easily walk around keeping in mind is is a functioning place of worship.

Strongly recommended.
