- StuartM1982Starachowice, Poland83 contributionsThe central point of your visitThe beautiful main square in the centre of Zagreb. This is a good point to get to know as the centre of your visit - as well as some lovely statues to look at in the square, it is surrounded by bars, restaurants and cafes and near the main attractions. A bit cold for sitting outside in February but I'm sure in the summer months this is an amazing place to sit and watch the world go by!Visited February 2023Written February 3, 2023

- Brooklet425Staunton, Virginia287 contributionsCenter of ZagrebDuring our trip to Croatia, Zagreb was just a quick stop en route to other cities. So we spent our short time in the city just walking around and taking in the sites and atmosphere. This area seems to be the hub of the city (in the historic area at least). We enjoyed just looking around at the colorful buildings, the unique old architecture, learning about the famous statue in the center of the square, browsing the windows of the stores, and walking along several of the nearby streets. There are also many different restaurants in the area. Personally, I think it's a good place to explore just to get a basic feel for Zagreb and Croatia. I hope to come back one day to see more of the city.Visited May 2022Written April 26, 2023

It has a statue of Croatian hero Josip Jelacic atop a horse, and is a large pedestrian square. It has some similarities to other large city centers we've seen in European cities, but is unique for the colorful buildings surrounding it and the convenient electric tram whose route runs along one side. Square in surrounded by historical building which has some decent restaurants and cafe to enjoy and see the locals go about there daily lives. Main feature of the public square is a statue of former count war hero on horse back, great for photo with historical buildings in the background.Visited March 2023Traveled soloWritten August 20, 2023
- Robin W. FoodCroatia89 contributionsChin upI never thought I would write a review of Ban Josip Jelačić Square. As a resident of Zagreb, it seemed inappropriate to me, and I felt that my review would be biased and subjective. After all, what could I possibly write that hasn't already been written by over a thousand people – it's a central place in the city with beautiful Austro-Hungarian architecture, a relaxed atmosphere, a safe place even at night, lovely Zagreb women, the proximity of many cafes and restaurants, a lively city market next to the square, flower sellers, street musicians... So, I thought that writing a review should be left to tourists. Today, I've changed my mind, and I was prompted to do so by a scene I witnessed at the square. So here it is: Late Indian summer, warm, hot... It's only ten in the morning, but the sun is scorching. I'm standing in the shade on the south side of Jelačić Square. In front of me, a homeless man is pushing a cart with all his belongings and collected plastic bottles. He is tall and slender. It's hard to determine his age because it's well hidden beneath long greasy hair, a beard, and clothes unsuitable for today's scorching day. I estimate he's around forty years old. I look at him and try to imagine him clean-shaven, well-groomed, bathed, and dressed in clean clothes. His voice snapped me out of my thoughts: "Young lady, you dropped some money," he said to a girl who was hurrying towards a nearby bakery. The girl was momentarily confused, turned around, and saw a €20 bill on the ground next to the homeless man. "Oh, thank you so much," she said, picked up the bill, and rushed to get her pastry. The homeless man just smiled gently and continued pulling his belongings towards the main train station, disappearing into the crowd of Zagreb residents and tourists strolling through the city in search of a pleasant place to have coffee or just to be seen in the city. My throat tightened. I looked at the statue of Ban Josip Jelačić. High above the statue, beneath the rooftops, I saw graffiti that read, "Chin up." Two words that best describe this wonderful person I encountered today, which best describe this square, this city, and this country.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 9, 2023

The Jelacic square is always crowded. Close to the old city, in the middle of the shopping area, is the centre of social life. Beautiful equestrian statue of Ban Jelačić in the square’s centre.

Most of the buildings around the square date from the 19th century, and display a variety of architectural styles, from Biedermaier to Art Nouveau and Post-modernism.
Here you will find the statue of Ban Josip Jelačić is the work of the Austrian sculptor Anton Fernkorn.
Central Square very beautiful.

Quite a lively place at night with entertainment stall and crowds of people.
The area is also where you meet your guides for many of the city tours. Easy to find and central to other areas which are nearby.

This is a very photogenic square with a large statue of Count Josip Jelacic (who gained independence for Croatia from Hungary) taking pride of place. There are loads of shops here and all the trams seem to pass through the square. It's also where the Zagreb 360 observation platform is.
