This is one of the best stops in Zagreb even if you’re not planning on watching a show. This imposing building is the Croatian National Theatre. It’s a bright yellow Baroque building liberally embellished with classicism. The upper level of the exterior is the most impressive. It’s decorated with pilasters, enabled columns and free standing columns of mainly Corinthian order. The only departure from Corinthian are the Doric columns at the main entrance of the theatre.

Croatian National Theatre is a great imposing building in the middle of a large square. The architectural style of Zagreb's old town is the Imperial Austro-Hungarian style and the town reminds Vienna very much of course. The theater fits the environment perfectly. We haven't been inside though. Some 200 feet in front of the front of the building there's an interesting statue/fountain by Ivan Mestrovic.

This building is worth it just for the design and color and lovely Baroque design. We didn't go in but just has a look at it when we were there. It is in a lovely park and is good place to have a quick stop and rest while in the city. The Well of life statue / water feature is just in front of it.

This is certainly a very impressive building. Spent a while sitting by the side of the building listening to a clarinet. So relaxing and not so hot today.
Went to Hemingway’s on the opposite side. Took afternoon tea there. Again great views of the National Theatre. Such a beautiful building.

This is a jaw-dropping awesome structure to see. There are many other beautiful buildings in this part of town so spend an hour or two walking around. If you are fortunate to attend a performance here it be unforgettable. But even if you are just seeing the exterior it is still worthwhile.

I saw a ballet performance at the National Theatre, their system is very good, just 1 hour before the performance buy a ticket not very expensive. The place is so plush and amazing. I was taken by the building inside as well as the skill of the performers. I had such a great evening and suggest all traveller try and see a performance.

We only got to see the building outside. However, it's definitely one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. I am glad my friend insisted to go and see it. Beautiful indeed!

This imposing heritage building is not only a meeting place for locals at the adjacent courtyard but a well known Centre of Performing Arts especially for epic drama and musicals from all over the world and also from Croatia. Many world renown artists and musicians performed at this venue. I could only visit this beautiful building from outside and enjoyed it's aesthetic architecture.

I went to see Ana Karenjina ballet there in late March, and sat in a sold out downstairs seats with my friend. The seats were roomy, and the stage and decorations inside the theatre were amazing. Everything was professional and I was transfixed by the ballet and the dancers and the orchestra performing upfront "under" the stage. The feeling of European theatre is fully met there, and it doesn't disappoint. The tickets were under $25 a person for a world class performance. We dressed up in our fancy clothes and had a champagne downstairs in the basement bar during intermission.
The coat check is another lovely addition to the experience, and the performance was stellar. We arrived to the theatre via taxi, but public transportation was also plentiful. Restaurants before the show were very close and the city is very safe to walk in.

How can I book the tickets of the national theatre?

Opera in Eastern Europe is very inclusive and you will see a bit of everything from jeans to fancy dresses. Be comfortable and enjoy, unless you fancy a dressy night out. Nice to see so many young couples and teens in the audience.

Hello,
I'm in Zagreb on 27/10 and there is a play of Ivanov (Chekhov). Nowhere in the CNT website does it say if it's in Croatian or English. Would anyone know?
Thanks in advance

Yes, but street parking is very iffy. The best way is to take Uber which is super cheap and not to worry about parking. That is what we do.

Are you located in the Old Town area? What are the opening hours and what is cost to visit inside building and/or see a show and cost of show and times? Do you pick up/drop off from hotel (Panorama Hotel).
Thanks,
Barbara,

The theatre is just west of the old central part of the city. We actually walked there. It was perhaps a 10 minute walk.
