About
Image of War is a museum dedicated to War Photography, the current exhibition "Up Close and Personal: War in Croatia" covers the Croatian War of Independence which lasted from 1991-1995 through works and stories of Croatian, Serb and world-renowned international professional photographers together with personal stories and photos people donated to the museum. Our motto is "War belongs in a museum" and our goal is to promote the importance of peace and raise awareness of the destructiveness which war brings to all affected sides. In an effort to actively help those directly affected by war, part of the revenue of all tickets is being donated to victims of war and refugees. * WARNING: The exhibition contains possibly disturbing and upsetting content. Visitor discretion is advised. I was extremely impressed with both the content of this little museum and the quality of its presentations. Docents are friendly and quite knowledgable, but I did not spend a lot of time with them. It was quite enough to absorb the images on display and sit for the couple of short videos. While this exhibit at the time focused on the war in Croatia, my understanding is that the Museum has a broader intent to show the world images of war from everywhere so that, hopefully, alternatives to resolving conflict will emerge and relieve the immense suffering that attends war. I highly recommend a visit to this museum. An hour or two would be enough to spend in the three or four rooms that host the displays.

You mustn’t miss it if you are a history fan, in particular regarding the 1990’s war period. Quite complete with video presenting the stories behind the excellent photographic works

The museum is newly opened in a great location, easy to find and close to downtown. It is aesthetically pleasing, modern and it has air conditioning. It is beautifully designed, unassuming and has a contemporary feel. Museum guide is very friendly, enthusiastic about history, knowledgeable, speaks excellent English and has a good timing when to offer information and when to let us go and explore on our own.

The selected photographs are stunning, haunting and an important fragment of the history of the war in the Balkans. Be prepared to be moved emotionally and you might get teary eyed. The photographs are impressive with genuine quality, expressing the sadness, agony, devastation, even innocence of children in war time (titles are in Croatian and English). They are simply exquisite. Downstairs you can comfortably watch an informative video and before you leave you can buy a poster or a T-shirt.

I went with my Mom and my 13 year old son who handled the graphic, war subject well. It is not suitable for little kids, of course, but I do think that older kids that are mature enough can enjoy and grasp the content. He found reading the personal stories that are displayed downstairs meaningful and it brought the subject of war little more closer to heart.

I highly recommend this museum if you love photography, history and are interested in finding more about the atrocities of this dreadful war. I grew up during this war and I am glad that I had a chance to show my son a glimpse of the time when my childhood was interrupted and the senseless war ravaged our nation and the good people that deserved none of it. The museum's motto could not ring more true...War belongs in a museum.

Excellent photographic images of the Yugoslav Wars (1991-1995) as they affected Croatia. A stark reminder that the veneer of civilisation can be pretty thin. Standing in Zagreb, the photographs of the casualties in Zagreb destroy all denial "Oh that was somewhere remote".

We found the museum last minute while we were staying Zagreb and we are very glad we did.
The whole museum is so well presented it is impossible to walk out untouched by the stories of all sides involved.
I would say it is a must see attraction for anyone visiting Croatia. It provided us with such a deeper understanding and appreciation of this beautiful country. Wonderful insight into where the country has been, but more importantly how it has developed to be such a lovely, welcoming and friendly place today.
Thank you for the education.

We are pleased and really touched with your sincere review. Although we are not a history museum, our exhibition shows a bit of our recent history and helps visitors to understand it more. Thank you for supporting and recommending us! Regards IoW

This small but extremely well done photographic museum chronicles the Croatian War for Independence from 1991-95. The 100+ photos are well organized and represent various aspects of the conflict. It is touching and heart rendering and provides great insight into what life was like during that period. The quality and variety of the photographs are excellent and the staff member there was helpful and passionate about the mission of the museum. A few short videos are also presented on the lower level as well as some first hand testimonies from people who lived through it. Highly recommended.

Thank you for a nice review! Your description of our museum is so precise that nothing else should be added. We only want to emphasize our motto that war belongs only in a museum! Regards

This is an excellent gallery, which includes photography from the Balkan Wars by professionals as well as locals. It works because it doesn't take sides and ensures that we never forget such a terrible time in late 20th century European history. I found it profound and very moving.

This museum is one of a kind among a number of war museums around the world. Display of photograpies depicting horrors of war is very moving and shows a different side of war. Instead of glorifying war history it offers an insight into perspective not often explored. Gripping pictures showing terrors of war and destruction followed by testemonies of survivors, witnesses and people behind the camera show the meaningles violence leaving open the question of its neccessity.
If you are a fan of history and photography don’t miss out on visting this museum.

If you are interested in history this is The place to go. if you are not, still it is a must see.
Exhibition is emotionally hard to swallow so be prepared for it. Photos do not depict battles and battlefield, but the lives of the people affected: mourning families, refugees, and soldiers on a front line.
Museum space and lighting are superb.

Thank you Rudi for visiting our museum and this very kind and positive review! The museum is smaller than most others, but we're glad that we managed to install the exhibition and interior in such a manner that the numerous photos are shown in the most effective and candid way.
