My husband and I visited Zagreb for the Christmas market and decided to book a food tour with Karmela to make sure we didn't miss anything special. It was a great decision because her Advent Food Tour was the highlight of our visit.

We walked around the different markets in Zagreb, trying food from different regions of Croatia. Not only did we find the best food (and mulled wine!) stalls the Christmas market had to offer, but we also got a great insight into Croatian culture and their Christmas traditions. Karmela was great company and passionate about good food. She made some great suggestions for us to visit for the rest of our time in Zagreb.

If you visit Zagreb for the Christmas market, I'd strongly recommend getting the most out of your visit by booking a tour with Karmela. Tip - arrive hungry to this tour because you will leave very full! :)

Karmela’s tour was above and beyond just a typical food tour. She constructed the tour as if it was a menu with each stop being a new course (i.e. bakery to taste bread, meat and cheese in the market, coffee break, strukli..etc). In between each food stop there is ample time and walking to enjoy seeing major sights and historical areas of Zagreb. The breaks in between each stop also give you enough time to digest the previous food so you're hungry by the next stop!

If you only have 1 day in Zagreb this is the perfect way to spend a full day tasting local cuisine and learning about the history of the city. We opted for the bonus location meeting in the bakery which started at 8 am and all in the tour lasted about 6 hours. We tasted many of the famous continental Croatian foods and wines and had great conversations with many of the local vendors we met along the way. A highlight for us was the strukli and the wine visit to Bornstein. All around it was a great day and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning about the culture of Croatia and Zagreb through food.

What a great way to see Zagreb! We did not go hungry. We learned so very much. And we saw all the lovely sights that tourists come to see. We began our tour early to see the bakery which was so interesting! Never had we seen anything like it. Glad we did that. The streets were quiet and calm at that time in the morning. Quite a contrast to the rest of the day. And then we proceeded to tick off all the tasty treats and experiences Karmela has planned. Every stop did not disappoint it only got better! We were four friends traveling on for an additional 2 weeks in Croatia. We could not stop talking about our experience with Karmela in Zagreb. We will never forget the experience. Karmela is a wonderful resource for those that would like to connect and get to know more about the wonderful culture waiting here in Zagreb!

It was our second day in Croatia and we were eager to experience the local flavors. Lucky for us, Karmela was our guide. Meant to be a small group tour, we were the only people scheduled that day, and had the best time. We visited the markets, sampled the great offerings and met the vendors. One of the highlights was meeting Doris at the wine shop who treated us to an array of wine and spirit specialties and some local charcuterie and fresh olive oil while explaining the Croatian wine industry. After touring the markets: Vegetable, fish, meat, cheese, and sampling strukli in a beautiful garden, we were rather full. Not particularly hungry when lunch rolled around, and we picked at our traditional meal which was our least favorite stop of the day. Maybe for us a little too traditional, with an old and moody waiter and dated cuisine. Onward to a lovely pastry and gelato shop, a stroll through the flower market and rounded out the day with a splendid cup of coffee in the afternoon. After a short rest, we found ourselves out on the town for dinner at Brokenships Bistro, which Karmela suggested for modern Croatian cuisine. We loved it! A day with Karmela is a great day in Zagreb!

We had a nice day walking, eating and learning about Zagreb along with a culinary history of Croatia. Karmela was a lovely host and I definitely recommend this tour. We covered a lot of ground which was good because we had a lot of food to work for :)

In December 2018 I booked a private tour for 5 people – Brunch and Wine tasting tour.

It was a food/wine tour combined with a history walk around the old city. Lots of great history detailed for us about Zagreb and Croatia.

Relative to other food tours I’ve done (6), there wasn’t a lot of food and it was a little expensive. Having said that, relative to all the other food tours I researched for Zagreb, it seemed on par for what was included. I recommend to have a light breakfast before the tour.

The wine tasting was spectacular! The sommelier was incredible and the wines were fantastic. I had never had Croatian wine before. Definitely on my list for my next time in Zagreb.

We were fortunate to be in town during the Christmas Market. We were able to stop and sample a couple other nice Croatian treats and learn a little more about Croatia particular to the season.

Our guides were very knowledgeable and fantastic company. Lots of little side stories, which I love from a guided tour by locals.

Meeting place was easy to find. There were appropriate bathroom stops along the tour. Coordination/payment was easy too. Tour was customized to our group upon request. Thank you!

I would recommend this tour!

When I met up with Karmela I had already been in Zagreb for a day and had done some exploring on my own, and what I loved best about the tour was that even when we went to places I’d been on my own, Karmela taught me something new.

We toured the market, had brunch at a cafe, did some wine tasting, and then visited a (gluten free!!!) pastry shop for sweets. In between we walked the town and Karmela shared her knowledge about its past and present.

I was also completely surprised that Karmela had sourced high quality, delicious gluten free bread for me to enjoy.

I really felt like this tour was tailored to me, which is a pretty special experience to have. It was a wonderful way to explore the city and learn something new.

My friend and I really enjoyed our time with Karmela. She was incredibly knowledgeable and so considerate, always making sure she wasn't walking too fast and that we were enjoying ourselves. We tasted a wide variety of food (fave - sardines!) and learned so much about Zagreb and Croatia. It really was a wonderful day with her.
