Tourists who go to learn about the history of Bulgaria at its museum and are treated with contempt.
I don't know if it was a civil servant, a work staff or what I know, but that red-haired lady who attended to us on December 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. was bothered by us from the moment we entered through the door.
To top off the poor service since we entered to do the calculations for the different tickets, I am going to pay with a card and they tell me very reluctantly that they have problems with "cash only" internet. I ask him to pay with euros and he tells me that he only has cash, I don't have any, so look for a bank, he tells me while making a fuss with his hands and leaves the building.
I think there are millions of Bulgarians who would like to serve tourists better in that warm chair that was there.
Of course I didn't look for the bank.

I enjoyed my stroll through the museum and the exhibitions were definitely lovely. I just wish there had been some information on Bulgaria’s communist era. While there are other options in Sofia to learn about Bulgaria’s communist past, I was disappointed that this museum seemingly had nothing from that era to offer.

Building located close to the Banya Bashi Mosque and immersed in a park with fountains which, however, are closed in January. Now this building houses the History Museum, we preferred to see it only externally. On the main facade on the sides there are fountains that provide hot water that you can drink.

This museum tells the history of Sofia from its first settlement to modern times. I like museums that are unique to their areas and which you cannot find elsewhere. The exhibit explanations are also provided in English. It was free for senior citizens.

A nice little museum but not at the top of the list. It's got some interesting things about Sofia history, though it conveniently omits some of the less positive aspects. There's also an couple art exhibitions to see as well. It only takes an hour or more, but even at that it's not worth your time.

The museum is very large but worth visiting. It is well maintained and traces the various historical periods of Bulgarian history, which makes everything even more interesting. We were very surprised by the various rooms hosting the period clothes and also the carriage. The staff is friendly. Visit Recommendation.

All periods are really well presented. I was impressed by the coach of Maria Antonieta and King Ferdinand. The archeology hall was incredible, especially Selvii Calist treasure. I hope they don't ruin this beautiful museum and make it bathhouse again.

We went on a free entry day, but the museum is good and set in nice grounds. Very pretty outside and you can even take away some hot sulphur water that is supposed to be good for you. Close to Serdika so worth going if in the area.

Excellent regional museum. We had free entrance as pensioners. Don student so discounted entrance fee 2 lev.
Spread out well and English on nearly all exhibits. Very interesting.
Got told off by very rude stern woman for sitting on a chair as was having trouble with painful hip! She could have shown me where I could sit but no such luck. Anyway rest of staff ok. Friendly woman on pay desk entrance.

This is a really interesting small museum, in the former public baths in the centre of Sofia. It is by no means a comprehensive history of the city, but focuses on two eras: the Roman history of Serdica, and the period of independence from late 19th - mid 20th century.
This latter era is represented through a wealth of objects donated to the museum, largely capturing the life of upper middle class families and royals around the turn of the century. There are some interesting room set-ups, and galleries on street life and arts & culture. Newly independent and fast growing Sofia looks beautiful in the many old photos and films, including one screened inside an old tram.
While a shame not to have a more comprehensive account of the city’s history, what is shown is interesting. Some more flavour of life of ordinary Sofia residents, and life under the Ottomans and in the communist era, would have been welcome
The building itself is attractive, in a quirky way, although not much evidence of its past life and it’s place in the city is left - I’d have enjoyed finding out about the role of the baths in the city. There is one gallery, displaying religious objects, where you can get a feel for the old baths.
Staff, all ladies as far as we saw, were extremely welcoming to us in their limited English and we felt well looked after and comfortable throughout our visit. We really enjoyed visiting and learned a lot about Sophia.
