Beautiful square building just North East of Vitosha Boulevard. Although we couldn't enter at the time it was very nice to walk around. The main entrance has colourful dressed guards. Be careful the entrance area is actually a main road that has traffic. Also interesting to watch important people arrive by car. Although we didn't realise at the time, around the corner inside, the Rotunda Church.

I was very lucky that my city tour passed in front of the Presidency Building in time to watch the changing of the guard. It was a fascinating ceremony. Afterwards, we went inside the complex to see the Roman ruins and Rotunda church.

I've never seen the longer official ceremony of the guards change in Sofia and I read online it is held on every 1st Wensday of the month, which was today. I was there 10 minutes before 12:00 with lots of excitement, there were only tourist groups, but I was able to find a central spot for watching. Unfortunately the information seems misleading as the ceremony was exactly the same I see usually when I pass the Presidency area- it was no longer than 5 minutes, the same number of guards, simple change and nothing else.

Apparently, the Presidency Builing was built in the mid 1950s as part of the ‘Largo’ complex. I had a chance to see a regular guard change that takes place every hour on the hour, but if you want the full pomp and ceremony be here on the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00 - there you can see the official changing of the guards complete with music, shouting and weapon brandishing.

Because this building is adjacent to the Sofia Balkan hotel where we stayed, it was just a short walk to it and to watch the changing of the guard and the funny fountain close by.

The main reason to come here is to see the changing of the guard on the hour. The procession is not as big as some other countries, but still interesting and worth the time expended. It is located just outside the National Archaeological Building, so it is convenient if you are going there. Just through the building is a little church in the courtyard that is also worth a few moments of your time.

The Presidency is Communist-huge and has two ceremonial guards out front. They change position on the half hour (switch sides) and then new guards come out on the hour. But the best feature is the church hidden inside the courtyard behind the Presidency (see separate write up), so be sure to check that out.

Was not inside the building but on the hour the guard at the front changes. We were there at 1pm and the short ceremony is quite precise and interesting to watch.

The presidential building is stunning, as you would expect of a presidential office.
It provides opportunity to take pictures but that’s it. It is not open to the public.
Top tip: whilst here check out the rotunda church. That is really worth visiting.
