Stunning monument that stands at the top of Vitosha Boulevard. The black and gold colouring is very striking. The bronze colouring is visible from quite a distance. This area used to be a statue of Lenin which was replaced in 2000.

Standing so tall with arms outstretched, you cannot miss her. A local resident told me that this statute doesn't represent one individual. She is a combination of Sofia and Athena which both symbolizes "holy wisdom."

Did take a photo on day 1. (You do need to zoom in with camera for decent picture ) But then lost interest, but only because we walked passed it so often

Inspired by the old emblem of Sofia dating back to 1900, standing tall, in the centre of the city, creating an aw to the passer-by. Won't be easy to miss it!

Well, it was a cold day when we visited and her gown is rather flimsy. Poor lass, I would offer to lend her my body warmer...

This statue placed on a high column is located at a busy road intersection between Vitosha boulevard and Banya Bashi masjid. The statue was built in 2001 replacing a communist era monument.

The monument is beautiful and imposing but it is on a place that is surrounded by trolleybus wires and is located in the middle of a crossroad, so you can't step close to it, and you can't even take a decent picture.

It's a nice monument. According to the tour guide, it was based on an Italian woman with 3 children. The city wanted to remove and replace all signs of communism. Sofia was sexier than Lenin. Easy decision.

Seventeen years ago there was a statue of Lenin here. That was replaced by this gold and black effigy of "Queen Sofia". Its not very popular with Bulgarians. Saint Sophia was actually a religious extremist whose three daughters were executed by Hadrian the year before he died in AD137 ; its got nothing whatever to do with Sofia and so you'd have thought they'd have come up with something more appropriate than a religious symbol. There must be some famous Bulgarian you could commemorate instead. Worth a photo - nothing more.

While I am aware that this statue is much loved by many, being the namesake of the city of the city of Sofia itself, it has few redeeming qualities in our opinion.

The historic centre of Sofia is already overflowing with attractive buildings including gilded churches, grand government buildings, impressive Neoclassical facades and ancient Byzantine stonework. This gaudy and witch-like statue of Sofia with her billowing robes and attendant owl is our least favourite addition to the cityscape. I understand it replaced a statue of Vladimir Lenin but perhaps the old statue did not need a replacement.
