This is the most convenient and fast way to travel to Sofia. Even now, I arrived with it at the airport from across town. Forget taxis that are expensive, dirty and in most cases lie with the bill - if you are not in excess luggage - use the subway.

As our hotel was rather a long way from the city centre we used the metro a couple of times. It was easy to find our way around and we were able to buy tickets in the station. The trains were frequent during the busy hours of the day.

We got almost cancelled our flight to Sofia, as people informed that there was nothing there. I am glad that we did not listen.

First, the Metro System is one of the best in Europe - efficient, the Stations are absolutely clean, with wide platform. For non locals, we did not have to ask for directions, the Metro map was easy to understand. The gem of the public metro journey is at Serdika Metro Station Station with the ruin of the Roman City Complex unearthed during construction. The Roman Ruin complex is a must see - I think it should be the biggest in Europe! Well done to all, for an efficient and smooth public journey.

Sorry to say. Metro in Sofia is not friendly for tourist. Lines are splited by additional 2 lines, like they couldn't just give the 2 additional lines and have 4 instead of 2 which are splited. If You need assistance and You are talking in English, just forget. In metro points You will meet no English speaking workers. You have to pay attention and try to understand how is working.

One of the worst experience I ever had from all the metros in Europe!! First they don't speak English! Any assistant we asked for directions was wortless cause we didn't get any answer. Second and more important is they don't take credit cards at the cashiers. ONLY CASH!! On our way back to the airport the last day we didn't have any cash on us. They send us to a vendor machine that was only in Bulgarian. We asked help from a 20 years old girl and she said she didn't know how to use the machine. Imagine us! Really guys!!?? Place people who speak English on public transportation and be a little more modernized!!

The Sofia Underground is something quite special compared with other cities.

Its cheap, quick, easy, clean and not particularly busy...

We’re blown away as to how beautiful they are inside, and not a speck of dirt or graffiti anywhere!

The underground stations are absolutely lovely and bordering on artistic.

Fast and easy movement. The metro is going to the airport. Excellent for avoiding the traffic. Ticket one way is 1.60 BGN . Convenient to pay also with card. Highly reconditioning.

Easy to use, has english indications. Has same price no matter how distant you go from one station to another. It's clean and bulgarians have a great attitude inside. Operators can control the tickets so keep it in a safe place till your journey is ended.

If you read the website of Sofia airport you can read that it takes 18 minutes to travel from Serdika station (centre of Sofia) to the airport and less than half an hour from Sofia railway station or bus station. If you believe this information you will miss your flight. From Serdika station it takes 35 minutes from the time the train starts to move until it stops moving at the airport station. Add on 15 minutes if you are travelling from Sofia railway station or bus station. Also add on the time it takes to enter the metro and the time it takes to buy a ticket. Remember that they will not sell you a ticket for the metro the day before you use it and that you have to buy two tickets if you have luggage.

Travelling with Sofia's metro lines is real adventure... (at the beginning I would like to say that travelling is even hard for the locals as me... so do not afraid to use it). So what are the disadvantages: the information is limited or missing for tourists (and locals also); when arrived at the station it is difficult to understand is this your stop or not; if you guest and leaved the train you will face the next problem - from witch exit to leave the station...; the station entrance/routes are not city spreaded well so you can't reach each point only by this transport.

What are the advantages: so far you need to pay once at the entrance only and you can travel as long as you want (but usually as everything in Bulgaria this practice will be changed); some of the stations are real museum beauty so it is good idea to leave the train just for a while and to take some picture... Stations line Lion's Bridge are underground street like...

Do not forget about the pick-pocketing...
