The Free Sofia Tour is a brilliant introduction to the history and culture of the city: just meet at the (southern) horse outside of the Palace of Culture and be transported, on foot, through 1200 years of history and archaeological sites in the inner city. The Communist walking tour was 11 Euro (just turn up) on the following evening and had an equally passionate guide whose detailed knowledge, experience and dark humour really brought the Communist years of the city to life through the main buildings, memorials and events of the time. Both tours HIGHLY recommended. The pamphlets seem to be in every hotel.

I have spent a so much good time with Dimitar on this tour, like he is really passionate about the history of the city, he really shared his passion with us with a a lot of passion. We learned all the important things on Sofia, the good little stories and the greatest part of the patrimony of this nice city. And, like it is supported by an association who want to do improve the social impact of their action like activities for school, we totally know where the money will go.
And one more good point :like the speakers can say what they want to say, the freedom of speach is guaranteed.

Don't miss that tour, it's an order!

This was only our second experience of a free walking tour (the first one being in Bratislava) and we absolutely loved it. We thought there wasn't much to see or knoow about in Sofia, which we quuickly realised was a very ignorant viewpoint and the free walking tours really helped in us understanding more about the city and the history of Bulgaria.

We did the Jewish Tour and the Free Walking Tour and our guides were both very entertaining and were able to answer all our questions very well. These free walking tours are amazing to find out more about a particular city or country and we honestly would've never found out anything about the Jewish history, how the name Sofia came about, or the geographical importance of the city in the past.

Our Free Sofia Tour guide was really interesting as she gave out free Bulgarian candies to us for answering questions correctly. We found that this helped us pay more attention throughout and everyone else also listened attentively.

This Tour is an absolute must-do while staying in Sofia. Martin, our tourguide, was so incredible nice and his way of showing us the city and telling stories and the historical background of places was just awesome! Everyone was able to feel his love for history and the city of Sofia.
The places we visited were well selected and within these 2 hours we went to see everything important. It was nice to have someone tell all the interesting tiny facts about the monuments and people.
I recommend doing this tour highly!! Thanks :)

I warmly recommend you to take part in this walking tour, especially, if this is the first time, that you're visiting Sofia. During its approx. 2 - 2,5 long tour you'll learn a lot in a very entertaining and playful way about the city's ancient and more recent history. Dimitar, our guide was excellent: full of energy, funny and well informed in his field. We really enjoyed the tour. After the tour we also visited some of the places, museums he suggested. Thank you, Dimitar!

We were a group of friends visiting Sofia for the first time and we are so glad we joined the tour, because we had the best time we could have in such activity. Our tour guide, Martin, was a Historian, a very funny one. He didn't give us a lot of dense information but instead he told us everything like it was a tale or story so we could start loving Sofia as much as he does. I can truly tell he is in love with his job. The city is so beautiful, interesting and full of historical places, anecdotes and fun facts ;) that is impossible not to like it too. #HowCoolIsThat

Our English speaking guide was Vasil and he was incredible. One of the smartest and wittiest tour guides I’ve had the pleasure of having.

He was there at the tour meeting point 10-15 mins before the start time (when I arrived) and I immediately felt very comfortable.

Vasil is friendly, highly knowledgeable and articulate, possessing the rare ability to speak to audiences of a wide variety of backgrounds. He never gave simple answers to complex questions but instead painted both sides of the story and let us decide for ourselves (for example, whether communism was a benefit or disadvantage to Bulgaria.)

Highly recommend! 10/10!!

Management if you’re reading this please provide an electronic way to tip. Not all of us have the luxury of changing to local cash in advance of the tour.

We did a free tour last week with Niki. I loved the way he explained the history of the city and its origins. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and kind, I'd recommend a 100% specially during your first or second day in the city, as he gives plenty of tips to enjoy the city afterwards.

What a born tour guide! Kathy was extremely knowledgeable and had the ability to engage her group making the tour interesting and highly entertaining. We were taken to places we would never have found on our own.
Later, on Kathy’s recommendation and with more time, we went back to explore a couple of the attractions which required entrance fees. Two hours with this dedicated guide is time very well spent if you want to learn about this beautiful city. Thank you for the the two Aussies.
