This statue is located in a square next to the Main Cathedral.
It's surrounded by the Parliament, the hotel Radisson Blu and other buildings.
It is called the monument of the Russian Tsar Alexander II.
His soldiers liberated during the Russo -Turkish War Bulgaria from Ottomans.
On January 4, 1878, the General Joseph Vladimirovich Gourko conquered the city of Sofia, which at that time had only 12,000 inhabitants, and for gratitude and in memory of this event , the inhabitants erected this monument .
The Italian sculptor Arnoldo Zocchi won an international competition and realized this monument.
The foundation stone was laid on 23.04.1901 , and was completed on 09/15/1903.
The monument style is neo -classical and the material is polished granite from the Vitosha Mountains.

A beautiful statue of the Tsar on his horse atop a base with multiple sculptures representing times gone by. It's striking and picturesque.

Located in front of the parliament building, completed in 1903, depicting the liberator of Bulgaria from the Ottoman empire. One of the most striking monuments, from many, in Sofia

Standing opposite the parliament building, this very large, detailed statue is certainly worth seeing. Very intriguing and detailed sculpure is carved into the plinth beneath the main statue.

Same as @Monument to the Deity All-Holy Sofia, this monument is also in terrible "position". Tsar Alexander is basicly surrounded by parking and streets... it really looks nice but you have to stand between parked cars if you want to take a good look...

The Monument to the Tsar Liberator lies in the centre of Sofia on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard (Yellow cobbles), facing the National Assembly of Bulgaria and with the Radisson SAS hotel behind it. It was erected in honour of Russian Emperor Alexander II who liberated Bulgaria of Ottoman rule during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78.

An equestrian statue of Tsar Alexander II stands atop this beautifully crafted memorial erected in 1903 to thank him for leading the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, which released Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire. Today, the memorial is often referred to as the Monument to the Liberators, which recognizes everyone involved in gaining independence for the country.
This monument stands in front of the parliament building, where the National Assembly meets in central Sofia. The bronze statue, restored in 2012, appears on a pedestal with an intricate bas relief that depicts many scenes, including Russian and Bulgarian soldiers and the Battle of Stara Zagora. I think this is well worth visiting for a few minutes to enjoy a close look and to reflect on what freedom from the Ottoman Empire meant to the Bulgarian people.
