Went to Vetrovala slope
Worst service ever. Paid for the bigger ski lift, the lift got broken again before I even try it so I took the small one. Full of children who drop a lot of tows and they have claims if u catch an empty one?!

The mountain is an impressive and constant backdrop as you are moving around Sofia.

I would advise taking the 64 bus from outside the cinema near Vitosha metro station. They run every 20 minutes or so and will take you up the foothills to Boyansko Hanche. The church is uphill on the left from the bus stop and you then have a steep 400m walk up the road which runs past the back of the church to find the trailhead.

My plan was to visit the waterfall and then push on to the Kamen Del viewpoint at 1800m. But virgin mobile were not playing ball and so I was unable to access my roaming internet , so had to rely purely on the trail signs. Should have started with the green trail which would in retrospect have been the easier route. But saw the white sign waterfall route and followed that. Or tried to. More direct, and very, very steep. Needed to use my arms and hands... a lot. Gruelling, but worth it. The waterfall is impressive in lots of different places on the way up, which took a couple of hours.

Then got a little lost - due to virgin and to indistinct paths, but had a moment of serendipity by stumbling across a clearing just to the west of the waterfall which afforded a magnificent view of the whole of Sofia at a height of about 1400m.

We didn't quite know what we were getting into when we decided to go for a little hike on the mountain. We weren't quite prepared for the 2+ hour trek to the Boyana Waterfall in the snow. However, it was an amazing experience. Come prepared for a serious hike. You will be climbing up and over rocks, sometimes on your hands and knees. It's not a gentle walk. The whole thing ended up taking us around 4 hours to do with a 1500 ft elevation change up (and then back down). It was certainly a workout. You do get a ton of amazing views along the entire trek.

Sofia is blessed to have this mountain of 2290 meters at mere 10 km from the center. It is a great outing for half a day to climb up. A little cafeteria on the top, although with a very limited selection of meals. Quite a bit of snow from December to May, so be prepared and equiped.

I walked from my hotel to the Dragalevtski Monastery, a 30 minutes walk up into the VItosha Mountain. Then walked on a 4 km path from there to the Boyana church, most of it in the forest in the mountain. A nice walk, even in the rain.

After exploring the great city of Sofia, I needed to be outside in nature. Twenty minutes by car later, I enjoyed walking at the base. An extra plus was visiting during Spring where everything was lush and vibrant. My escape was a nice break from the capital.

Fantastic getaway from the city. Only 10 km from the city centre and you are in a different world. Recommended to take the cable car as there is not a lot of parking places up there and in the snow can be very difficult. Kids love it.

Beautiful mountains behind Sofia.
Easy to get there.
Catch the metro to Vitosha and then the number 66 bus as far as the Moroni Hotel which is where the bus terminates.
There are lovely walks with stunning views.

Both our hotel concierge and the tourist information office in town recommended hiking from Golden Bridges. Easy to get to on the very frequent 63 bus from Krasno Selo metro. A variety of trails can take you all the way up Black Mountain, if you choose. Easy to flow paths with a fair amount of altitude gain and some lovely views.

Vitosha Mountain can be accessed from many points. We asked advice at the tourist information office and followed it. We caught a taxi (inexpensive) to Simeonova where we got the cable car up to Aleko - only 10 Lev for a round trip. At the top are a few rather shabby buildings which are used mainly in skiing season. Basic food, chips and coffee kept us going. Lovely walk with great views over Sofia.
